Mission Statement
Our mission is to reduce the harm caused by homelessness, exclusion, and poverty by providing a safe welcoming daytime environment with access to a range of essential services and to encourage recovery and reintegration through the promotion of personal development and links to other organisations.
About This Cause
We are a day centre based in the east end of Glasgow for the homeless, vulnerable, and socially isolated, providing those who attend with a safe and welcoming space, practical and emotional support, health and wellbeing interventions, free food, as well as activities and trips to engage and inspire a wide range of individuals. The ethos behind the structure of the service is to reduce harm and build meaningful relationships and trust. "I feel like I’m not ostracised here, I’m with people with similar stories to share, people who understand me." The people we support have issues such as low income, poor physical and/or mental health, addictions etc and many of our clients are also offenders/ex-offenders. Most have complex needs. Although most of our client group are male, we are seeing a slight increase in female clients. Our Intervention worker is on hand to provide a range of support to everyone who needs it, from benefits help to making an appointment, emotional support or housing help, to name only a few, she will help wherever she can in whatever way possible. "Angie got my benefits sorted. I was really struggling until I started getting adult disability payment and now I am not." We are open on weekdays from 8.30am to 3pm, serving breakfast until 10am (with a hot choice being offered as well as cereals) and a three-course lunch between 12pm until 2pm (1.30pm on a Friday). Additional services on offer include opticians, barber, podiatry, emergency clothing and toiletries. We are open on bank holidays including Christmas Day, where we provide Christmas dinner and gifts for all who attend. Narcotics Anonymous meetings are held in LHM on regular evenings and are well attended. "This [LHM] is the only reason I get up in the mornings, otherwise I’d just be in bed, or I’d be getting drunk and then not getting up the next day." Recently we have also ran clinics such as: Vaccination Clinics • Medical surgeries • Blood borne virus checks. We serve on average 70 breakfasts and in excess of 90 lunches daily. Dignity for our client groups is very important to us so we provide table service throughout the day. Each day we have different activities on to promote positive mental health and inclusion such as: Table tennis • Film Club • FIFA tournament (PS5) • Pool tournament • Dominoes tournament • Bingo• Quiz • Giant chess • Movie club • Swim and sauna In addition to the regular activities, we also provide day trips bi-monthly. These trips are designed around the weather as well as people of particular age/ability to ensure that everyone can access an outing. These trips include: Day at the beach • Theatre visit • Go-karting • Historical trips • Paintballing "Getting away for the day means I can leave my troubles behind for a wee while." To ensure we provide the best service for our client group we liaise and work in partnership with organisations including: NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde • Organisations supporting people with addictions • Glasgow City Council (social work/housing) • Police Scotland • Simon Community • Glasgow Life (e.g., Artists in Communities programme) "My tutor said I was a beautiful writer. No-one has ever told me that before." We're fuelled by donations (financial, as well as food and other consumables), grants and the support of a small army of volunteers e.g., see https://www.glasgowlive.co.uk/news/glasgow-news/inside-lodging-house-mission-ho meless-25402047. Our charity has been established since 1909.
