Maggie's Centres

Mission Statement

Maggie's is about empowering people to live with, through and beyond cancer by bringing together professional help, communities of support and building design to create exceptional centres for cancer care.

About This Cause

Maggie’s Centres provide practical, emotional and social support to people with cancer and their family and friends, following the ideas about cancer care originally laid out by Maggie Keswick Jencks. Maggie lived with advanced cancer for two years and during that time she used her knowledge and experience to create a blueprint for a new type of care for anyone affected by cancer. She saw the need for a warm and welcoming place that would be a refuge from the stress of the hospital; somewhere with professional experts on hand to help with information and advice; a place where you can be with people who understand what you’re going through or a place to simply gather your thoughts. The first Maggie’s Centre opened in Edinburgh in 1996 and since then Maggie’s has continued to grow, with Centres at 16 major NHS cancer hospitals in the UK, as well as online and overseas.
