Mission Statement
At Recyke-a-bike, we believe in the power of the bicycle to change lives, strengthen communities, and support a more sustainable future. Since 2005, we have been driven by a clear vision: a world where everyone has access to a bike, the skills to ride it, and the confidence to travel actively and independently. Our mission is to remove the barriers that prevent people from cycling by making bikes and cycling opportunities accessible, affordable and inclusive. We refurbish donated bikes, offer cycle training for all ages and abilities, run employability programmes centred around bike mechanics and active travel, and work in schools and communities to deliver practical cycling support where it is needed most. Recyke-a-bike is rooted in social and environmental purpose. We reduce waste by saving hundreds of bikes from landfill each year. We tackle inequality by giving bikes to those who cannot afford them, and we support physical and mental wellbeing through cycling initiatives tailored to all kinds of people – from young children learning to ride, to older adults regaining their confidence, to those with additional support needs or disabilities. Our community bike shop provides affordable bikes and repairs, alongside offering inclusive volunteering opportunities and accredited training. We work with local authorities, schools, third-sector organisations and NHS services to deliver wide-reaching, locally relevant cycling support. Our employability programmes help people build confidence and skills that can lead to further training, work or volunteering. We also run inclusive projects such as adapted cycling for disabled riders, free Dr Bike sessions in areas of deprivation, and school-based cycling lessons across the region. Our values underpin everything we do: Inclusion – we believe cycling should be for everyone, regardless of age, background, income or ability Sustainability – we promote cycling as a climate-positive, zero-emissions mode of transport and reduce waste through repair and reuse Empowerment – we help people build skills, confidence and independence Community – we work in partnership with local people, groups and organisations to respond to real needs Integrity – we act with transparency, care and commitment in all that we do Recyke-a-bike is a unique charity that brings together environmental sustainability, community wellbeing and social justice. By combining practical cycling support with skills development and targeted outreach, we create lasting, positive change in the lives of individuals and in the communities we serve.
About This Cause
Recyke-a-bike is a registered charity and social enterprise based in Stirling, Scotland working to create fairer, healthier and more sustainable communities through access to cycling. Founded in 2005, we believe that everyone should have the opportunity to own and ride a bike, regardless of their income, ability or background. Our work combines environmental action, community wellbeing and social inclusion through a wide range of practical cycling programmes and services. Recyke-a-bike, originally named Fallin Community Enterprises, began in the village of Fallin, an ex-mining community just outside Stirling, where unemployment rates were high and opportunities for skills development were limited. The project was created as a grassroots response to both social and environmental challenges, with local people coming together to collect and repair unwanted bikes that would otherwise go to landfill. The aim was simple: to provide affordable bikes to those who needed them while offering practical skills, volunteering opportunities and a sense of purpose to people in the local area. Operating initially out of a small space in the village, the project quickly gained momentum as demand grew and the benefits became clear – not just in terms of transport access, but in confidence building, community connection and environmental impact. From those early days in Fallin, Recyke-a-bike evolved into a fully registered charity and social enterprise, now based in Stirling and supporting communities across Central Scotland, but still rooted in the values of inclusion, sustainability and local empowerment that shaped its beginnings. At the core of our organisation is a commitment to reuse and sustainability. Every year, we divert thousands of unwanted bikes from landfill, repairing and refurbishing them in our professional workshop or harvesting parts off bikes that cannot be repaired. These bikes are then sold at affordable prices or donated to individuals and families who cannot afford one, helping to reduce transport inequality and enabling access to the benefits of cycling. This work forms part of our circular economy model, extending the life of bikes whilst meeting community needs. Our community bike shop offers low-cost sales, servicing and repairs, as well as essential cycling accessories. The shop also supports volunteering and training opportunities, enabling people to develop confidence, mechanical knowledge and transferable skills in a welcoming and inclusive setting. Our team of mechanics, staff and volunteers provide an open and friendly environment where learning and participation is encouraged. Recyke-a-bike delivers cycle training and bike-related activities for all ages and abilities across Central Scotland, including Stirling, Clackmannanshire, Falkirk, and beyond. Our school-based programmes reach thousands of children each year through Bikeability training, learn-to-ride sessions and cycling confidence classes. We are proud to have supported 100 percent of primary schools in Stirling and Clackmannanshire to deliver on-road Bikeability Level 2 training, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to cycle safely and independently. We also offer inclusive cycling opportunities for people with disabilities or additional support needs. This includes adapted bike sessions for people with mobility issues, visual impairments, or neurodiverse conditions, allowing them to experience freedom, movement and social connection in a way that suits their needs. Our community Dr Bike sessions provide free bike repairs and safety checks in areas of multiple deprivation, helping people keep their bikes roadworthy and safe. In addition to community cycling and maintenance programmes, Recyke-a-bike runs InspiRide, a structured employability and training course focused on bike mechanics, cycling skills, workplace preparation and personal development. InspiRide supports people who are out of work, facing barriers to employment or looking to build new skills and confidence. Participants gain experience in bike repair, interview preparation, volunteering, communication and team work, with many progressing into further training, volunteering or employment as a result. The programme reflects our belief in the power of cycling as a gateway to improved wellbeing, social connection and economic opportunity. We are committed to working in partnership with others to extend the reach and relevance of our services. We collaborate with local schools, youth services, housing associations, NHS teams, support groups, community centres and third-sector organisations to identify and address real needs. Whether it is providing bikes to asylum seekers, helping older adults regain confidence in cycling, or supporting people with mental health challenges to build new routines, we approach each project with care, flexibility and a commitment to inclusion. Our charity is values-driven and community-led. We aim to reduce isolation, promote active lifestyles, build community resilience and tackle inequality through practical, hands-on support. While bikes are our main tool, people are at the heart of what we do. We recognise that everyone’s starting point is different, and we meet people where they are, offering them what they need to move forward, whether that is a bike, a skill, or simply encouragement and time. As well as delivering direct support, we advocate for a culture of everyday cycling, where active travel is safe, accessible and normalised. We support national climate goals and local transport strategies by encouraging more people to choose cycling as a regular means of travel. Our work helps reduce carbon emissions, traffic congestion and health inequalities, while increasing wellbeing, community participation and mobility. Over the years, Recyke-a-bike has grown from a small grassroots initiative into a respected regional hub for active travel, training and environmental action. Our staff, volunteers and trustees bring a wealth of expertise and passion, and our work continues to evolve in response to the changing needs of the communities we serve. Recent projects include tailored cycling guides for neurodiverse children, inclusive cycling sessions for people with visual impairments, respite cycling sessions for Young Carers, the development of a new volunteer pathway, and ongoing investment in the quality and accessibility of our services. Ultimately, Recyke-a-bike exists to create positive change through cycling. We believe that by making cycling more inclusive, more accessible and more embedded in daily life, we can contribute to a healthier, fairer and more environmentally responsible society. Through strong local partnerships, innovative projects and a clear sense of purpose, we continue to help people from all walks of life enjoy the freedom, connection and opportunity that cycling brings.
