Mission Statement
The charity has two primary objectives - The care and wellbeing of young people with cancer and their families and the provision of accommodation for care and respite for young people with cancer and their families at no cost to them.
About This Cause
It's Good 2 Give provides practical and mental health support to young cancer patients and their families in Scotland. We fund 4 psychologist posts - 2 in Edinburgh and 2 in Glasgow to fill a gap in access to mental heath support at diagnosis and during treatment - something identified by a young cancer patient who approached us to ask for our help. We worked with the NHS for 2 years to identify the best model of support and have agreed to fund these posts for 5 years. We provide snacks for patients and parents in the paediatric oncology wards in Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Aberdeen, Parent and Patient packs for emergency admissions to hospital in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Inverness. We respond to requests from professional staff for practical support for example they donated medical training equipment to the oncology wards in Edinburgh and Glasgow to aid training for nursing staff and to communicate procedures to families in a practical way. An example of this is recently donating a treadmill to allow a teenage cancer patient to continue his rehabilitation at home following treatment for a brain tumour which resulted in the loss of his ability to walk. Without this he would have had to stay in hospital many miles away from home. In addition to this, It's Good 2 Give built a retreat in 2017 for young cancer patients and their families to spend time together at no cost to themselves. We called it the Ripple Retreat. It is an oasis of calm for the whole family to focus on their mental and physical wellness away from the hospital environment. Families are often forced apart with one parent staying in hospital with the sick child while the other remains at home, often miles away, to fulfil work commitments and to care for other children. Families can stay at the retreat for up to five days during their child's treatment or in the year after treatment. The Retreat is also available to bereaved families in the year following bereavement. Volunteering is at the heart of the charity and in 2019 the Charity's volunteers were rewarded with the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service and in 2022 they were given the Investors in Volunteers Award - both of these awards are testament to the value placed on the Charity's volunteers.
