Mission Statement

Teapot Trust is a mental health charity that supports children, young people and families coping with chronic conditions through the provision of art therapy.

About This Cause

Teapot Trust has a vision of a future where every child or young person living with the pain, stigma, and associated trauma of a painful long-term condition can access transformational art therapy without barriers or cost. We provide art therapy across the UK as an effective psychological intervention to improve the mental health and emotional wellbeing of children and young people with long term health conditions such as Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA), Sickle Cell Disease and Cystic Fibrosis. One in four children and young people suffer with a long-term, painful, health condition that can cause complex childhood trauma. They undergo regular and invasive treatments and procedures, often feeling misunderstood and isolated from their peers. Children and young people struggling to cope with a long-term condition are at greater risk of anxiety, longer-term mental health problems, and suicide ideation. Most children find hospital overwhelming, scary and confusing. They are often in pain, anxious about invasive treatment, and struggle to process their feelings. Getting absorbed in art therapy helps keep them distracted and calm. However, its value goes much deeper. Although art therapy is not currently statutory provision, it is often prescribed by paediatric clinicians because it has proved more effective as a coping strategy than traditional talking therapies. Taking referrals from clinicians also alleviates pressure on Children and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS). Teapot Trust art therapy eases anxiety, reduces self-harm and suicide ideation, prevents mental health issues continuing into adulthood, and relieves strain on family relationships. 93% of children make positive progress towards their goals. “When she was rushed to hospital time felt like it stopped. Our world just collapsed. Then when she began art therapy with Teapot Trust everything changed. Jane, the art therapist, built confidence in Sfiyah that allowed her to start talking about her feelings and processing what was happening. Her body language changed. She became relaxed and happy again. I can’t stress enough how essential it was for her to have a way to communicate with us that wasn’t just verbal. How she feels can be far too complex for her to articulate. Sfiyah’s newfound ability to express herself through art therapy allowed her to share her feelings. My little girl’s sparkle is back and that’s all thanks to Teapot Trust.” (Parent)
