Mission Statement
SHIPO MISSION: To promote sustainable inclusive access of social and economic opportunities, which benefit project participants and contribute to community resilience. We do this through their Participation, Resource Mobilization and Multi-Stakeholder Cooperation.
About This Cause
There is sufficient evidence supporting the fact that climate change and variability are pervasive realities that are strongly impacting both human and natural systems, including conservation of edible orchids in Southern Highland of Tanzania. Rainwater harvesting (RWH) is one possible appropriate technological option to improve water supply and water recharge for restoration of the water to its nature. Challenge The challenges are the scarcity of water in an area of which came from climate change. More than 64512 in the project schools are affected by the drought. The community that are affected shall benefit from the solution including students as well the community surrounding the public institutions where the projects are intervened. Solution Getting water shall not depend on fetching water from the natural source where found its scarcity, instead water will be matched from building roofs such as Schools, Health centers and others such as community that shall be trained and practices from the water catchments of which after uses of that water, the remaining shall get recharged underground and later to get recycled for water restoration to its nature. We do this through their Participation, Resource Mobilization and Multi-Stakeholder Cooperation. Rationale: SHIPO has a focus on sustainability, whether it concerns the quality of products and/or services it provides as an organization or whether they are realized in the community or by service providers which have been trained by SHIPO. We consider the financial, institutional, environmental, technical and social elements of sustainability (FIETS sustainability framework) SHIPO believes it can only achieve substantial and sustainable impact through the participation and the coordinated effort of multiple stakeholders. This coordinated effort includes resources mobilization, i.e. contributions in cash or in kind of project partners and participants. SHIPO will promote and support skills development, innovation and business development on solutions that respond to societal challenges. More specifically SHIPO does this through the promotion of SMARTechs and by supporting the development and dissemination of (new)SMARTechs and other solutions. 3.3 SHIPO VALUES SHIPO has selected the following values as leading: • Integrity: We stick to organizational policies, procedures and regulations to live up to our moral and ethical codes • Accountability: We want to be a reliable and trustworthy partner to internal and external stakeholders and are committed to deliver what we promise • Flexibility: We respond and adapt adequately to challenges within the organization and in the external environment (dynamic), especially government plans changes. • Innovative: We are committed to find (new) solutions for emerging challenges and add value for our stakeholders/target group. • Inclusive: We use a participatory approach in stakeholder involvement and ensuring engagement of marginalized groups Sectors; • Water – Water and climate ( Rain water harvesting and tube recharge system) • Agriculture – e.g Agroecology – restoration of the soil back to its nature, Nutrition • Environment – Restoration of environment back to its nature • Education – Capacity building to public institutions (Schools) as part of participants as drivers the success. challenges As an NGO working to improve poor people’s living standards in Tanzania through the WASH and Education sector, we are engaged in a multitude of activities through our projects in a bid to achieve the overarching objective by; Working with communities to improve and develop the education and health sectors. Together with communities, we are building school infrastructures such as classes, Latrines, Dining halls with kitchen, staff houses, and dormitories in different levels of education to improve the education environment in the country. In the health sector, together with communities and other partners, we are working on improving a health environment by constructing infrastructures for dispensaries and health centres as well as providing health materials. Supporting families and communities in improving Sanitation standards by constructing latrines in schools as well as slabs for those latrines. In this area, we are also working as a voicing platform by providing advocacy on issues relating to Hygiene and Sanitation Supporting communities to have sustainable supply and access to safe and clean water. SHIPO does this by using various means of methods to supply water to communities either by low-cost technologies (SMARTecs) such as boreholes, open wells with rope pumps, gravity water systems, rainwater harvesting systems, Pumping Systems, and or hydram water schemes. We are also running a SMART Training Center which provides training to NGO’s, CSO’s, Institutions, Private Entrepreneurs and Individuals on low-cost water technologies. The training includes tube well drilling, hand-dug wells, piston rope pump production and Installation (Self-supply) and groundwater recharging systems to mention a few. Plastic recycling is part of the project SHIPO experiencing. Current ongoing projects 1. Education project; equal access to education (facilitating latrines, Desks, water infrastructures, and teaching and learning methodologies. Funded by PCF, a Swiss organization. 2. Training of trainers project; The main goal of this project is to contribute in improving sustainable water supply and sanitation in Tanzania. i. To increase skills on management, planning and designing maintenance-friendly water supply networks for 21 to 51 people covering from 5 to 9 Regions of Tanzania by June 2023; ii. Establishment of Small groups of Trainers (3-5 people) who in the future can carry out trainings without external support, from 5 to 9 Regions of Tanzania by June 2023; and iii. Establishment of peer-to-peer learning, monitoring and follow-up procedures in RUWASA at Regional and District level within the Project coverage in 9 Regions of Tanzania 3. Self-Supply project; Improve access to water and enhance sustainable production of food in Njombe, Iringa, Mbeya, Songwe, and Ruvuma regions of Tanzania with two specific objectives. a) Enhance capacities and professionalization among local private sector actors (artisans, micro- entrepreneurs and small enterprises) to deliver water improvement and maintenance services for rural and peri-urban dwellers b) Enhance resilience of small-holder farmers and enhance their food security through agroecological techniques and efficient water management practices 4. Multi-stakeholders climate action plan; involve; a) Youth secondary schools, b) Government, at village, Ward and district level, c) Artisans and entrepreneurs (use of SMARtechs) d) Local industries and Organization, e) Civil Society – for awareness raising campaign. Prevailing challenges on the community according to SHIPO priorities out of many existing problems. 1. Malnutrition; in the southern Highlands (Rukwa, Songwe, Mbeya, Iringa and Njombe) stunting is higher by 49% for under 5 children compared to other regions in Tanzania. 2. Water and sanitation; water infrastructures in Tanzanian communities are much scarce whether by distribution or resulted from drought. The southern Highlands normally is green and results to most of the basins depend on water streams from the southern highlands. Though climate change is challenging water diminishing its table. 3. Environmental pollution; the form of Agriculture, using chemical fertilizers on crops growing in the southern deteriorate soils from its nature. Agroecology are the way and solution to combat the situation in Tanzania especially southern highlands. 4. Sexual exploitation; abuse and harassment is the main issue in Tanzania. SHIPO has been started to execute its interventions through existing education in 45 primary schools in Ludewa in Njombe region and Mbozi district Songwe region, funded by we World and PCF respectively. It was just a component of the project. But we need to have a specific project aiming to tackle the prevailing situation. ……such as ….Rapping, early marriage, Child employment which results to not getting equal access to the right and formal education. 5. Institutional Capacity building; Planning, Monitoring, evaluation and reporting (general Capacity building of SHIPO) , exposure and being confident running the organization (as the general manager is new to lead the organization. This shall help the organization in its efficiency. 6. Lack of funds; SHIPO is donor-dependent, to complement the mentioned government plans. Your cooperation is very important to partner with SHIPO for the welfare of the people in tanzania.
