Mission Statement
The Cedars is a community which offers a continuum of outstanding living options for older adults. We promote quality care and service, support wellness and maximize independence. With strong roots in our Jewish heritage, we welcome people of all backgrounds. Our Vision The Cedars will remain the preferred provider in greater Portland of living options and services for seniors by: responding to community needs and advances in our field, balancing social and economic objectives to ensure our fiscal health and quality of service, and attracting, retaining and developing stakeholders committed to our mission.
About This Cause
Originally founded in 1929 as The Jewish Home for Aged, The Cedars has had a successful 95-year history of providing residential and healthcare services, and community-based programs for older adults in the Greater Portland, Maine community and throughout the State of Maine. With strong roots in our Jewish heritage, we welcome people of all backgrounds. The Cedars provides a full continuum of living and residential services for older adults including short-term rehabilitation, long-term care, assisted living, memory care assisted living, independent living, and community-based services. We embrace three core principles: attention to excellence, a passion for older adult care, and a commitment to innovation. Today, The Cedars serves one thousand patients, residents, and members each year; employs a staff of 230 from approximately eleven different countries; and welcomes thousands of visitors to its campus each year. As preferred provider of Maine Medical Center and Northern Lights Mercy Hospital, The Cedars participates in (2) Center of Medicare and Medicaid accountable care organizations and is designated one of three heart friendly facilities by Maine Medical Center. The Cedars was acknowledged in 2022 by the John T. Hartford Foundation and Institute of Health Improvement as an Age Friendly Healthcare System committed to excellence in quality care. A distinction of which only five hundred long-term care communities nationally have attained. In 2021, The Cedars was recognized by U.S. News and World Report to be among the top 21% of U.S. skilled nursing facilities in the country. With hundreds of state and national partnerships, our awards, research, and educational opportunities have catapulted us into the national spotlight, becoming Maine’s leading older adult community and a national leader in older adult care. In March 2021, The Cedars completed construction and opened the Sam L. Cohen Households. This project resulted in forty private rooms for enhanced residential care, the addition of Memory care assisted living for twenty residents, and the home environment needed for the transition to the Household Model of care. A model of care which emphases a person-centered approach. The first households in Maine and New England. A fulfilled need in the community, this model of care has been very successful and in demand.
