Greater Portland Landmarks works to preserve and revitalize greater Portland’s remarkable legacy of historic buildings, neighborhoods, landscapes, and parks.
About This Cause
Founded in response to the Urban Renewal movement and the demolition of Portland’s historic Union Station, Landmarks works to increase the public’s connection to greater Portland’s historic built environment by providing leadership, advocacy, educational publications, programs and resources, and by acting as stewards of the Portland Observatory Museum for future generations. Our goal is to save greater Portland’s historic places through preservation and adaptive reuse while promoting creative new architecture that enhances historic neighborhoods. Greater Portland Landmarks serves as the connection between greater Portland’s authentic built environment, its high quality of life and its strong economic base through preservation services, educational initiatives and public advocacy. With more than 80 active volunteer Trustees and docents and more than 800 members and donors, Landmarks is committed to preserving historic downtowns, neighborhoods, cultural landscapes, and protecting Maine’s quality of place. Landmarks reaches a broad constituency through targeted, on-site delivery of technical assistance and related programs, connecting with property owners, developers, municipalities, and non-profit organizations. This is complemented by educational lectures and workshops for children and adults, and tours of historic buildings and neighborhoods. Landmarks fosters community dialogue by convening stakeholders, particularly around issues related to urban planning, waterfront development, historic architecture, climate change, density, and green design, while fostering a deeper connection to greater Portland’s cultural landscapes. Landmarks manages and stewards the Portland Observatory (1807), a National Historic Landmark and the only remaining structure of its kind in the US.
