Mission Statement

At the Ronald McDonald House, we provide at little to no cost a special place to call home where families lean on one another for support, volunteers channel their passion for helping people, staff are program champions, and donors help keep our doors open all year long. To serve more families than just those who stay at the House, the Ronald McDonald Family Room is open 24/7. There, families grab a snack or cup of coffee and take a break just steps from their loved ones. Both at the Ronald McDonald House and Family Room, caregivers find the respite they need to be able to focus all of their energy on what matters most - their child's health.

About This Cause

Our 14 guestroom Ronald McDonald House Bangor opened its doors in 1983; RMHC Maine became a Chapter in 1989; the 21 guestroom Ronald McDonald House Portland began welcoming families in 1995; and to serve even more families of pediatric patients the Ronald McDonald Family Room, located within the Barbara Bush Children's Hospital at Maine Medical Center opened in 2008. On April 1, 2015, Ronald McDonald House Bangor, Ronald McDonald House Portland and Ronald McDonald House Charities Maine merged to become one organization - Ronald McDonald House Charities of Maine. This aligned the three entities to become stronger in our mission of healthy children and families. As pioneers of family centered care, RMHC of Maine strives, in partnership with those who share our mission, to be part of the solution in improving the lives of children and in strengthening their families when they need us all the most. At the Ronald McDonald House, families find a welcoming smile from a friendly volunteer, a home-cooked meal to enjoy after a long day at the hospital, a good night’s sleep in a caring environment and receive the support needed to endure a most difficult time. Last year, 7,595 nights were provided to 694 families with 13 nights as the average length of stay. The cost of a family’s one night stay at the House is $75; however, families are asked to contribute only $10 per night towards their stay. Over 70% of those families were unable to contribute due to mounting medical bills. No family is turned away due to inability to pay, ever.
