Mission Statement
Friends of Casco Bay’s mission is to improve and protect the environmental health of Casco Bay.
About This Cause
Concerned citizens formed Friends of Casco Bay/Casco Baykeeper® in 1989, after a report identified our waters as one of the most polluted regions in the nation. We launched our Monitoring Program to collect scientific data on the health of the Bay. Informed by this data, our Baykeeping Program advocates for solutions. Our other programs include Casco Bay Curriculum, our vessel Pumpout Service, and numerous volunteer projects. We are a founding member of Waterkeeper® Alliance. Our accomplishments include: ● training more than 750 volunteers over the years to monitor water quality ● winning a No Discharge Area designation, making the Bay one of the most protected water bodies in the country from ship pollution ● developing a method to measure acidification of clam flats ● successfully advocating to reduce sewage pollution into the Bay ● helping municipalities comply with stormwater laws and develop ordinances designed to reduce pollution
