Mission Statement

The SCH,I. aka Joan Nicole Prince Home provides 24 hr./day bedside care to terminally ill patients in need of a safe, comfortable caring home in their last few weeks and months of life. The JNP Home also provides end of life care education to pre-health professional students.

About This Cause

Located in the Village of Scotia, The Joan Nicole Prince Home provides 24hr bedside care for 2 terminally ill patients at a time and is staffed primarily by volunteers. Laundry, meals, personal care, cleaning and support to our residents and their families are just some of the services our home provides. Services are free of charge and we are recognized as an IRS 501(c)(3) charitable organization. Since opening June 2006, the home has provided care for 148 terminally ill patients and their family members and friends. The JNP Home is not a medical facility nor is it owned or operated by the Hospice organization. However, we collaborate with Hospice as they provide the medical management for the patients, in the same manner as done for someone in their own home. The few staff and volunteers of the JNP Home become the “surrogate family” for residents. JNP has long recognized troubling gaps in the educational progression of health professions students. Few students in any health professions field are provided adequate opportunity to learn patient-centered, community-based care or to develop the skills necessary to work effectively as part of a holistic, interprofessional health care team. Over five years ago, JNP partnered with numerous institutions of higher education, to begin addressing this need through an informal service learning internship. The program introduces students to the importance of providing comfort, dignity, and patient-centered care to people facing a prognosis of three months or less to live, and affords them the opportunity to serve as surrogate family members to terminally ill residents under the supervision of trained hospice workers. Students from a diverse range of academic health professions programs participated, leading to extensive interest and recognition of the program’s uniqueness and value. This caused exponential growth: the program now serves more than 100 participants each year and incorporates the following elements: • Serving as a surrogate family member responsible for resident care needs; • Observing hospice care team members and resident care staff; • Offering emotional support to family members and friends visiting residents; • Providing resident care narratives and carefully documenting care decisions; and • Completing a reflective journal entry after each shift. The annual budget to keep the home’s doors open is approximately $235,000.00. Funding is thru individual donations/contributions, memorials, fundraising events and grants (no Medicare/Medicaid or Insurance monies received). We thank you for your compassion and generosity to support this great cause.
