Mission Statement
Our mission is to reconnect people with nature and each other, through daily nature interactions in the Biodome. We are striving to build the tropical oasis dome as a new nature engagement center to provide year-round nature at your doorstep. The uplift, calming setting to de-stress, and enhancement of interpersonal connections will build community. The design includes a green technology showcase within the nature education environment for people to experience innovative advances for a better future. Nestled within the quarter acre tropical forest are community use spaces to encourage spending more time in nature, an activity room, conference room, eco amphitheater, and a half dozen circle niches distributed through the micro-valley contours. These features contribute to the usable functionality of the Biodome, allowing everyone to absorb the life-rich experience while doing their daily tasks. The final objective is to have an expanding network of tropical oasis domes in numerous cities, changing and improving people’s daily lives, sharing a connection to the life on this planet. We believe the cumulative effect will lead to a better future living closer to nature.
About This Cause
The Student Greenhouse Project is a student initiated movement working to build tropical oasis Biodomes. We are headquartered in Lansing, Michigan. In the living green oasis, we will emphasize education and personal rejuvenation during the day and in the evenings, host weddings, concerts, plays and other social activities. Generations of students have polished and expanded the design, working out the details of the rainwater harvesting system, including a conference room, and arranging the plants. The multi-use garden layout aims to immerse people in nature while working remotely, meeting, studying, enjoying events and spending more time in nature. The embedded Ecological Communications Theater is a prime public outreach feature for disseminating green information and public education. The overall design provides social engagement, health benefits, and an underlying rationale for frequently returning to the garden. The Biodome is envisioned as a green infrastructure showcase, promoting water conservation with a rainwater harvesting system, processing of the facility’s graywater, green roofs, green walls, and bioremediation strategies, while offering engaging hands-on public demonstrations. The facility’s sustainability is enhanced by transparent solar panels from peak to base on the south face and the passive solar heating/ evaporative cooling thermal regulation design. Having a community activity hub in a green infrastructure showcase is an innovative approach to simultaneously address environmental and social needs. The objective of improving people’s comprehension of green infrastructure options is accomplished by the ongoing experience of the facility’s features, while the health and social benefits from the restorative experience, will keep people engaged. We have researched discoveries medical and psychology investigations are uncovering, highlighting the importance of nature interaction, forest walks, greenspace, and vistas in child development, daily health, cancer and post-operative recovery, workplace productivity, and life satisfaction. An extensive compilation is at https://www.sgpbiodome.com/research. These revelations empower our conviction that we need more nature in our day-to-day lives. Working with the Michigan State University we have examined building codes and best practices. In this collaboration we prepared a preliminary cost assessment for the facility, including a north entrance building housing the electrical/mechanical equipment, arriving at a construction cost of $10 million USD in 2020. We are developing concepts for personal and community revitalization with nature as the core value. The Biodome movement is more than a construction project, it targets a deep transformation through nature-inspired sharing, enhanced interpersonal connection and informed community growth.
