Mission Statement
El Sol is a 501(c)3 nonprofit whose mission is to improve the quality of life of all residents of the Town of Jupiter by providing services to those in need, especially day laborers and their families with the vision of promoting a harmonious integrated community in which all people can achieve their highest potential. We seek to be the model for other communities dealing with day-laborers.
About This Cause
El Sol is a grass -root community-based organization that has developed its charitable work since 2006 and has evolved into a well-recognized organization delivering needed programs in Jupiter, Florida. El Sol has developed its work under a logic model that refer to actions and strategic planning through 5 core areas: labor, education, health, integration, and capacity building. The labor program serves a number of 120-150 workers on a daily basis that otherwise would have ended up looking for work on the streets in town. It provides them with a safe an organized center whose environment is trusted in the community by assisting individuals in finding work. Also, a comprehensive list of vocational training classes are provided to align with the needs of local employers in use of such labor force under different trades. The Education program provides education and skills that help individuals become financially stable and integrated members of the community. Therefore, we provide English as a Second Language daytime and nighttime classes, Spanish Literacy, Computer Skills, and Financial Literacy classes. All educational programs run a Graduation ceremony 3 times a year where the achievements of the students are recognized and the community supports. Different partnerships have been developed to integrate the needs of a mostly Mayan population who are workers with low literate background. Since they talk in different dialects mainly coming from Guatemala and Mexico, it becomes quite difficult for them to learn English if not introduced with their own structured language as Spanish in first place. Therefore, El Sol has Plazas Comunitarias Program delivering Spanish Literacy and progressing them to the level they can graduate and receive their elementary and high school certificates coming from the Mexican Department of Education. El Sol has also partnered with Palm Beach County School District to attend the needs of the day laborer's children going to local schools who mostly cannot graduate if not assessed in a number of academic gaps they normally present. Since El Sol approaches the individual under a holistic manner, it has also included the need of a Health Program that increases access to health care services and health information in the community. The organization has partnered in the community with different local entities to form MyClinic together with community partners to attend the needs of an underserved community and teach them about healthier lifestyles. In this respect, we included the development of an Organic Community Garden divided in 30 plots serving each the needs of 10 low-income family members. Since we also have a kitchen program serving meals to those individuals that were not able to go out for work during the day, the community garden has enhanced the quality of food provided by incorporating more nutritious and healthier meals to workers. These meals many times count on their only source of food if they do not go out for work during the day. More vegetables and fruits have been incorporated in such meals as the garden's produce is being used in the preparation of different healthy menus. El Sol has understood the need to build bridges of communication that promote a strong community which is ethnically and culturally diverse. Therefore, we delvelop integrational activities such as Civic Education, Community Service and events as those pertaining to Art Fest and Holiday ones to bring about good will and inter cultural exchange. Finally, El Sol commits to high standards for an efficient, stable and responsive organization as well as achieving organizational excellence. El Sol has been recently certified by Non Profits First and intends to be a model for similar organizations nationwide.
