Mission Statement
Mount Washington Observatory is a private, nonprofit, member-supported institution with a mission to advance understanding of the natural systems that create Earth’s weather and climate. It serves this mission by maintaining a weather station on the summit of Mount Washington, performing weather and climate research, conducting innovative science education programs, and interpreting the heritage of the Mount Washington region.
About This Cause
For 92 years, Mount Washington Observatory in the White Mountains of New Hampshire has dedicated itself to understanding the natural systems that create Earth’s weather and climate. Our summit weather station, one of North America’s longest-running high-altitude climate records, is uniquely positioned to provide essential data for understanding climate patterns and extreme weather. With your support, we can continue to sustain this historic institution, powering research and discovery in mountain meteorology and advancing climate literacy. Our dedicated team of weather observers and researchers work at the summit of Mount Washington to manage a weather station and a regional mesonet of weather monitoring stations. This crucial work informs our twice-daily Higher Summit Forecasts and regional forecasts and aims to enhance safety for outdoor enthusiasts. Our data also contributes to regional, national, and international research studies. Through educational programs and outreach, we connect the public with the wonders of science and the natural world. From school visits and professional development for educators to digital resources and hands-on experiences, our programs inspire future scientists and engage over 350,000 people in weather and climate education each year.
