About This Cause
The Caring Power of Community Since 1952, Monadnock United Way has harnessed the caring power of community to improve lives throughout our entire Region. We unite people from all sectors of the Monadnock Region to solve the toughest problems facing us today. We believe that when we work together, we make all our region’s communities stronger. The problems challenging us are complex; they are issues that no single organization or individual can solve: Children- We have the third highest rate of child abuse and neglect in the state Education- Our children score lower than the rest of the state in English and math Financial Stability- One quarter of our residents are low-income. The rest of NH the rate is 1 in 5 Uniting for Children, Education, and Financial Stability Real change is possible when nonprofit, public and private sectors team up to work together. And alongside our community, Monadnock United Way is addressing these three issues in innovative ways. Founded in 1952, Monadnock United Way is an autonomous and independent organization governed by a Board of community members. Our accountability is to our local volunteers and donors. Decisions on which programs to fund and all other operating and policy decisions are made here in the Monadnock Region. Although Monadnock United Way is best known for conducting an annual campaign which provides funding for needed services to people in the region, community building represents an equally major effort. Monadnock United Way collaborates with a variety of partners to help identify and address emerging issues and specific human service needs. These partners include social service providers, foundations, local government, education, and the medical community. Monadnock United Way has an endowment, which has been managed by the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation since 1987. These funds are restricted and invested to provide a permanent source of income for Monadnock United Way's administrative budget. Contributions to the endowment provide permanent income to help underwrite MUW costs.
