Mission Statement

to Provide sound programs and create opportunities which help improve the economic, educational, and social status of the disadvantaged and marginalized residents of Hillsborough County.

About This Cause

Provide Self Sufficiency; educational and enrichment opportunities to children and their families since its organization in 1907 as a School and Church. Seized the opportunity in 1999 to enlarge its territory in serving youth & families. The 501 ( c )3 status was received in 2002. Since that time, we have provided support to children & their families with emerging and emergency resources to enable them to realize their full potential. We leveraged our efforts & resources and began with strategic partners/funders including Florida A&M University Institute on Urban Policy, Radio Shack, Best Buy; AMSCOT, Children’s Board of Hillsborough, Tampa Bay Workforce Alliance, and other youth & family serving organizations such as the CDC of Tampa-Prodigy. We have provided remedial reading & computer classes, homework assistance; “Too Good for Drugs” curriculum; Survival Life Skills; Employability skills training for older youth, Arts; etiquette, Dress for Success, educational & fun field trips. We have managed and delivered on contracts between the CDC and other organizations possessing common objectives for empowering people through a holistic approach toward self sufficiency Currently, we operate an AIDS CARE STATION, initiated in 1992. We have collaborated with several community organizations such as Hospice of Hillsborough, THAP, Tampa Aids Network, and currently Metro Wellness, Inc. to provide personal care kits to needy families affected by HIV / AIDS. We recognize the impact grass root efforts have in bridging the gap towards economic prosperity, and reducing the reliance upon governmental interventions. The CDC’s service delivery and service access policies are neutral and non-religious. By focusing on self-reliance through the development of healthy, positive, and productive lives, we promote responsibility and accountability; help build self-esteem, and guide our customers in developing the skills necessary to sustain a meaningful life. One of our most important business goals is to be a catalyst for progress in the communities we serve. In 2004, we began a partnership with CAREERSOURCE Tampa Bay and its One-Stop collaborators to provide Employability Skills training for its TANF consumers. This successful collaboration led to our management of their 2004/2005 Passport To Economic Progress initiative. We also facilitated their 21st century “Digital Divide” Technology training of their TANF candidates from 2005 to 2010, in preparation for employment. From 2005- 2009, the CDC partnered with the Tampa Bay Area Faith Based Alliance to present the HSBC "Your Money Counts" Financial Literacy workshops to over 1,500 residents in Hillsborough county. We partnered again in 2006 to present its first Women’s Empowerment Conference. This event targeted women from grass-root community, nonprofit & faith based organizations in the Tampa Bay Area. Our chief presenters were the Hillsborough County Health Department, YMCA, FDOE and the Judge Don Castor Community Law Center. Additionally, the American Heart Association’s GO RED Initiative, was featured at the Conference Luncheon In 2007, we again partnered with the Hillsborough County Health Dept. “STEPS to a HEALTHIER Fl.” To provide education and a higher awareness of the health disparities associated with Stroke and Heart Disease to local congregations and their surrounding communities. A comprehensive curriculum was presented which included informational sessions with experts. Nurse practitioners provided Blood Pressure and Glucose checks, weight Body Mass index screenings. Healthy eating choices were presented by a registered dietitian and this segmented included a recipe/food demonstration and lunch prepared by a chef using recipes from the American Diabetes Association. In 2010, we initiated a FOOD PANTRY to address food insecurity: in partnership with Feeding America (TampaBay) we provide Food to needy families twice a month, and in emergency cases as needed. For over 20 years, over 300 hot meals have been delivered to seniors, the homebound, & persons with disabilities during our annual community Good Friday Dinner; and complete meal baskets at Thanksgiving, Christmas and other occasions. Our desire has been to bring awareness to the crisis of hunger in our community. To date, over 80,000 pounds of food have been given to persons facing hunger every day, since 2010. Since 2014, Greater Mt. Carmel partnered with the Tampa District annual youth convention. The Theme is "A PLACE WHERE INTENTIONAL LEARNING IS FUN". This highly successful event, held in June of every year is the premier annual gathering where youth from underprivileged and at-risk families showcase their talents as well as participate in Leadership and Character building workshop sessions. This much-anticipated event attracted over 300 youth and adult advisors and supporters. Youth, ages 2 to 18 competed for awards in the following Events/Categories were: Poster, Spelling Bee, Essay Writing, Oratorical/Gospel Poetry/Rap and Jeopardy. Youth also participate in a Talent Showcase, Let’s Move” sporting events/physical activities, and a Dance Social. We include other learning opportunities, such as a series of Youth Financial Literacy workshops in partnership with Third Federal Savings & Loan and Priority Title. Each child received a $25 gift card and a Back to School shopping spree which included school supplies and new school clothes provided by Guess Jeans. We continue to offer opportunities for young people to expand & intensify their enrichment experiences. To ensure children are safe & ready to learn ,We have partnered with The Children's Board of Hillsborough County since 2015, to provide summer / out of school learning experiences. The goal of our educational and enrichment programs is to improve the quality of life for children and their families; positively impact the educational prospects of underserved youth, and reverse a history of below average academic achievement. We have been deliberate in designing our programs to promote the emotional and social well-being of our youth, who are at risk for school absenteeism, drop-out, disciplinary action, drug use, gang & other criminal activity. Our Summer Enrichment curriculum has been a unique blend of Music, Dance, STEM, Literacy, Character Development, Safety &, Learning tours- (last year we visited Ybor City & La Segunda Bakery). Each week will include a “Safety” Curriculum Activity (Last year, we offered Cyber Safety and the SAMHSA Too SMART TO START Alcohol Prevention Curriculum & “KNOW BULLYING”.) This year we will offer Bicycle & pedestrian Safety; Conversational Spanish, Chess, and Horticulture-Gardening for Food & Fun. In addition, a different ARTS genre will be presented each week (voice, piano, Pantomime, Drama & several Dance genres). One of our community events is a STEM Fair. Participants will compete for special incentives and prizes.
