Mission Statement

“e” inc. is the Boston-based planet science learning and action non-profit that provides under-resourced children and youth a scientific understanding of Earth’s beings, biomes, resources and systems plus the action skills our children and youth can use to protect the planet and make a difference. We are a 16-year-old organization. Our motto is: The science of the planet and the skills to make a difference as supported by the effort of our city's children and youth.

About This Cause

The Work of "e" inc. “e” inc. motivates and engages young people in an array of topics comprising planet science. This, in turn, leads to deepened science literacy. “e” inc. also involves students in action tasks, and with middle-and/or upper-school students, opportunities to engage in the work of environment justice. “e” inc. educators use a plethora of teaching techniques, from hands-on experiments, ongoing investigations, data collection, written reflections, etc., and pairs these with community, class, or individual actions. Our students gain social and emotional skills that alter their view of themselves and their capabilities. They also gain a deeper understanding of the workings of the world around them. “e” inc. provides both in-school and after-school science programs -- inspiring urban learners to be doers working to change outcomes for the planet. Each program has its own goals and curriculums. All together, “e” inc. reaches 6,500 students a year via in-depth year-long science residencies in day-schools, after-schools, and community teen-teams. “e” inc. is committed to engaging young people, across ages, in the workings of the planet, by linking science understanding, social engagement, and action outcomes that enhance student self-respect. “e” inc. Key Programs “e” inc.’s goal is to create science-literate young people committed to understanding, and protecting the beings, biomes, resources, and systems of the planet. Since our beginnings as a science provider to children in public housing (2003), “e” inc. has experienced yearly growth and has continuously expanded its outreach work in order to reach and teach city children where they learn and live. “e” inc. has 4 core community-based programs. These are: A) Planet Protectors: An afterschool program for urban elementary-aged children. “e” inc. remains at each of 14 sites all school-year, teaching 3 distinct teams 11-weeks of hands-on science on one of 12 science topics. Using active learning models, coupled with ongoing student-led projects, Planet Protectors gives children a deep understanding of how a specific science process or system ‘works.’ Sessions can focus on such topics as: ecology, specific biomes, the world of the dinosaurs, primates, the ocean system, the Amazon rainforests, gardens and growing, and even outer space. Each Planet Protector lesson is 1.5 hours and provides a well-paced hour of fascinating science weekly, along with a 30-minute action session that involves each group of age-related children in activities that make a difference at their school, home, or neighborhood. (B) ChangeMakers – a science investigation club for urban middle or high school youth that teaches science and promotes (1) leadership skills, (2) ongoing science investigations, (3) social skill-building, (4) monthly teaching opportunities with young children, and (5) the planning and creation of 3 or more projects that will help or make changes in the local community. This is a small team youth program, at one locale, with a team that remains together all school-year. An “e” inc. educator meets the team twice weekly. Youth engage in local or broader issues. They learn new science, do field investigations, hear speakers, make plans to aid their community, and prepare/teach a science lesson to 1st graders in a nearby after-school once-a-month. Two Summer Field Trip Programs at 2 Distinct Ecosystems: (C#1) Explorations in an Urban Wild -- a free all-day field trip to the Allendale Woods (West Roxbury) that immerses 15 children/youth in a woodland ecosystem -- investigating animals, pond-life, and topography of an in-city 90-acre woods. (30 groups served) (C#2) Discovering Fort Point Channel -- a free all-day field trip to Fort Point Channel, involving 15 children/youth in the beings and ecosystem interactions in a saltwater channel replete with crab investigations, as well as other species, daily. This culminates in an exciting all-kid dragonboat row up and down Fort Point Channel. (30 groups served) (D) Kids Green Their School (KGTS) – KGTS is a year-long science residency and the subject of this proposal. Pre-COVID it was in 11 K-5 schools. The program centers on the science driving 1 resource kids can control and conserve each year (i.e., how it is used at the site, how it is used across the world, and kids can conserve it). Students translate their ideas into 1 across-school sustainability project that is used in every classroom. Why School Partners welcome KGTS at their site: 1. Our science teaching style excites their students and helps to create a love of science; 2. Children learn and retain a new science topic – a deeply needed outcome in urban sites that provide minimal science aross many schools. 2. Students become engaged in, and work to master, the planet challenges of the day; 3. Students see themselves as more knowledgeable; 4. Students see themselves as important and capable; 4. We help every child participate in action, and feel like a valued doer; 5. We pair a staff member with a site for the full schoolyear – creating continuity for their students and helping the children experiene commitment to caring and action. Last school year, pre-COVID, “e" inc. taught public schools in 8 low-income neighborhoods in East Cambridge, Charlestown, Roxbury, Dorchester, Chinatown, East Boston, Hyde Park, and the North End. Across all programs, “e” inc. taught 25 ongoing academic-year and 6 summer partnerships at schools, community centers, housing sites, and social service agencies, plus 60 one-time field trip programs through our summer field excursions. Our demographic numbers support our stated commitment to reach and teach Greater Boston’s under-exposed young people.
