Using a holistic approach, ACSGW helps the disadvantaged and disenfranchised in the community attain self-sufficiency and independence. ACSGW works to improve clients' physical, social, and mental well-being through compassionate emergency care, life education and community development.

About This Cause

Adventist Community Services of Greater Washington (ACSGW) was established in 1983 as the collective health and social welfare arm of several local church congregations. Today, ACSGW is a faith-based, nonprofit organization whose mission is to help those less fortunate in our community. We empower those in need through compassionate emergency care, life education, and community development. ACSGW currently provides case management, food, clothing, diaper, emergency financial assistance, health and fitness programs, technology education, and job-training. Our education/job-training programs include: English as a Second Language (ESL), General Educational Development (GED), computer basics, advanced computer certification programs, and Job Quest workshops. ACSGW currently serves over 6000 low-income families each year. We take a holistic approach to serving this population by providing and growing programs that encourage participants to attain long-term solutions to their general and economic health and well-being. ACSGW is a safe and understanding environment that works with families and individuals in the Washington Metropolitan Area who are in need of assistance, regardless of their race, ethnicity, gender, religion, age, or sexual orientation. ACSGW is a immigrant center based in Silver Spring, MD that was founded in 2002. As of 2022 they had $1,994,136 in revenue and $249,703 in assets. During 2022 ACSGW distributed 663,590 pounds of food and 398,502 diapers. Clients must fill out an intake form providing financial eligibility and pertinent employment and family information. Clothing assistance - Clothing allocations are determined under the same requirements as for food. Clothing can only be received once every ninety days. Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday giving projects - These projects are set up to allow low-income families to have the foods traditionally tied to these holidays. Families must register and fall within the low-income guidelines to be eligible to participate in these projects. Christmas toys are also distributed under the same criteria. Referral assistance - ACSGW provides referrals to agencies that can assist clients with specific needs ACSGW is unable to offer. Licensed counselor - This program provides counseling services, by appointment, to children, adults and families. Summer learning day camp- With support from Montgomery County ACSGW conducts Summer learning camp to children in the community, in science, mathematics, arts and swimming. Education and job training: computer and software training - students are trained in the use of current computer hardware and software with the goals of acquiring hands-on experience and the ability to take and pass the national it certification exams. English as a Second Language/GED - Students are taught conversational English, reading and writing of English, so that they are prepared to take and pass the GED exam, and thus receive a high school diploma. GED classes in Spanish are also available. Job Quest - This program includes workshops that address resume preparation, interviewing, online job searches and online job application. A local job database is being developed to assist participants in their job search. Computer classes - beginning computers is taught by a certified teacher in English and Spanish. Swimming pool programs: ACSGW provides swimming pool services to the community for a nominal fee. Educational programs in the areas of basic, intermediate and advanced swimming lessons; kayak safety training; and scuba diving safety training are also provided. Health programs offer water aerobics in shallow water and in deep water, and lap swimming is available during most open hours. Charitable programs to encourage participation include:*discounted swim sessions for elementary school children during the school day*discounted swim time for city recreation department programs*discounted rates for low-income adults, seniors and children*free admission to children of very low-income families for general swimming*free enrollment in stroke and turn classes for a limited number of low-income children*special discount programs for Non-English speaking low-income residents.
