Mission Statement
Founded in 2002, ArtWorks, The Naomi Cohain Foundation is a not-for-profit 501(c)3 organization dedicated to improving the healthcare experience of pediatric patients through the arts. ArtWorks provides children and young adults starting from birth to age 24 facing chronic and life-limiting illnesses, and their families, access to creative and performing arts programs that serve as a vehicle for healing, communication, self-expression and personal development.
About This Cause
Our Inspiration Founded by Daniela Mendelsohn, ArtWorks is inspired by the life of her late cousin, Naomi Cohain. At the age of 14, Naomi was diagnosed with late stage bone cancer. Working closely with an art therapist, Naomi’s passion for the arts provided a vital emotional outlet and source of comfort throughout her illness, enabling her to experience the joy of creative expression despite her pain and grief. Naomi led a brave battle and through ArtWorks’ programs her story lives on, inspiring others and serving as a testament to the therapeutic powers of the creative process. About ArtWorks For the past sixteen years ArtWorks has been the leading provider of art programming for children and their siblings battling chronic or terminal illnesses in New York and New Jersey. We serve patients with varying diagnoses from cancer to asthma and 85% of the children we serve are economically disadvantaged. The arts play a significant role in humanizing the healthcare experience for children who are battling illness. Our programs use art to bring families together and offers a mode of expression that transcends race, language, age, and ability. We seek to empower our participants by validating and honoring their experiences through self-expression. Over the past two years, we have seen a 40% growth in our population. Our programs are successful because ArtWorks works hand in hand with hospital staff to gain a deeper understanding of their internal structures and then identifying the children that most need our programs.
