Mission Statement

AHA's Mission Statement We are stewards of Hawaiian heritage. At the Academy of Hawaiian Arts, we cultivate and evolve the traditions of the native Hawaiian people through instruction in the performing, literary, and folk arts of Hawai‘i. Beginning with a foundation in hula, which encompasses the essence of Hawaiian history and customs, the Academy provides students an understanding of the origins of Hawaiian traditions, while also advancing new expressions of Hawaiian arts, music, and language. Inspired by our motto, “Ke kukui nānā i luna” (The light looked up to), we strive to sustain the vitality of Hawaiiana — past, present, and future.

About This Cause

Hawaiians have a rich and vibrant culture that has been passed down from generation to generation through ‘olelo (Hawaiian language), hula, chants, and other traditional arts. However, Hawaiian culture is often underrepresented in the mainland United States. By competing in the Merrie Monarch Festival, which is by invitation only, we can help to raise awareness of Hawaiian culture and show the world that it is thriving outside of Hawaii. The majority of Native Hawaiians (58.1%) now live outside of Hawaii (US Census, 2020). This means that it is now more important than ever to support and preserve Hawaiian culture outside of Hawaii. In this light, our participation in the Merrie Monarch competition is particularly important to us as we are the ONLY hula halau entering from outside of Hawaii, despite being where the majority of Native Hawaiians now reside.
