Mission Statement
The Story Pirates is a renowned educational media company that brings together incredible comedians, musicians, designers, best-selling authors, and teachers to amplify the words, ideas, and stories of kids on the world stage. The mission of Story Pirates Changemakers – the nonprofit arm of Story Pirates -- is to ensure that our programs are accessible to kids who wouldn’t otherwise have access. We focus on underserved students and schools where language arts instructors are not given the time and space for fostering children’s creativity and curiosity. To serve our mission, we teach and inspire creative writing through high-quality literacy programs and performances for under-resourced elementary students, inspire and collect stories written by kids and adapt their ideas into sketch comedy and music which is shared in assemblies, our podcast, on PBS, and more, which continues the cycle of inspiring kids to write and believe their words matter. No matter how big Story Pirates grows through our media projects, Story Pirates Changemakers exists to ensure that our reach into under-resourced communities and programming made accessible to under-served kids deepens at the same pace.
About This Cause
Since 2004, our organization delivered the majority of our robust literacy lessons, typically serving around 15k students annually, through in-class workshops and live assemblies for full-school populations at public schools. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, when faced with the prospect of being unable to work in person with any of the students we typically serve, our tireless staff focused its creativity and ingenuity on pivoting to virtual program content. Since March of 2020, we’ve created thousands of online workshops, and hundreds of virtual shows, assemblies, and special events, plus a daily radio show, and a new weekly TV show with PBS, ultimately reaching upwards of 1.2 million students with meaningful, playful, and impactful content. Theatre Annual, noted that “Story Pirates, by hewing closely to its mission to uplift the voices and stories of kids, created an experience far closer to live theatre performance than the myriad Zoom performances that other companies embraced as they struggled to maintain connection to their audiences. These extraordinary efforts warrant Story Pirates a significant place in the recorded history of American theatre in the twenty-first century.”
