Mission Statement
A children's ministry and women's refuge high in the Lake Atitlan highlands of Guatemala.
About This Cause
Opal House is a Children's Ministry focusing on rural and impoverished Mayan Guatemala. Free medical and surgical services are provided in two local clinics, pediatric orthopedic reconstructive surgery is offered without charge every year. Montessori preschool and elementary school is offered without charge. This is a "head start" program to stimulate and nourish impoverished rural Guatemala. Nutritional supplements are provided in the school including high levels of protein, vitamins and minerals. We also have a Peace chapel that provides character development to the children and their families. Opal House is uniquely situated on 70 beautiful acres overlooking Lake Atitlan, and has been reforested with 15,000 new trees and is fully organic. We grow Hass avocados and organics shade grown coffee. We are also teaching local farmers how to lovingly steward the land without pollution and waste. Opal House is a fruitful and productive 14 year old mission. A children's Mission founded by Dr William and Diane Boegel(formerly of Virginia Mason (Seattle Podiatrist of the Year, 2005) and Diane at Group Health) with a focus on medical and surgical services in Guatemala a central american of 18 million people without a Children Hospital. High quality Montessori education is provided as a head start for an undeducated Mayan rural population. We also have a Refuge house, housing women and children in crisis without charge. Our Peace chapel features Montessori religious education for character formation. Our beautiful farm is a fully organic Hass avocado and coffee farm and the land has been reforested with 15,000 trees in the last 7 years. We also feature a clean water program for our town of Agua Escondida(hidden water) with ozonated, clean spring water. Opal House has been a loving and good neighbor to other organizations around the beautiful Lake Atitlan for 8 years. Dr William Boegel is also a founding Rotary member of RECLA, a new rotary club in Panajachel. Many community projects have been realized through our Rotary contacts.
