Mission Statement
The mission of the Lake Champlain Community Sailing Center (CSC) is to encourage and celebrate responsible use and long-term stewardship of Lake Champlain by fostering educational and recreational opportunities for all members of our community, regardless of age, gender, race, physical ability, or financial means. Our fee-based services and our non-profit programs combined provide lake access for more than 8,000 increasingly diverse participants annually. While many of our participants are from Burlington, South Burlington, Winooski and other nearby towns in Chittenden County, our reach includes Lamoille, Washington, Franklin, and Grand Isle Counties of VT, as well as visitors to the area. For 27 years we have served the community by providing access, education, and recreation. Our founders knew sailing and paddling could be tools to provide affordable on-the-water educational opportunities, recreation, and inspiration for new generations of lake-based stewards. We use non-motorized boats (sailboats - including those adapted for people with mobility issues - kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards) and a carefully designed curriculum to teach valuable life lessons. Each year, we examine our programming and look for barriers to lake access and lake-based education and recreation that we are able to tackle.
About This Cause
The CSC is a community-based nonprofit entering our 28th year as a vital community resource providing access, education, and recreation to Lake Champlain to over 8,000 community members annually. The CSC was founded in 1994 as a place for the community to connect to Burlington’s waterfront and to the lake, enabling Lake Access. Life Lessons. For All. At the CSC, non-motorized watercraft become the tools to enrich people’s lives, offer a unique environmental education experience, and instill a sense of ownership in one of Vermont’s most valuable natural resources - Lake Champlain. The Community Sailing Center recognizes the health and responsible stewardship of Lake Champlain as a vital component of our program development and delivery. Our core values of Water, Access, Vitality, Education, and Stewardship (WAVES) have guided the CSC in adhering to our mission throughout our 22-year history. In 2014, Burlington residents provided the CSC the opportunity for a permanent home on the Burlington Waterfront. Informed by a thoughtful planning process, the CSC crafted a strategic vision that invested in necessary infrastructure to transform our local grassroots organization into a national leader in experiential and place-based education. The CSC designed and executed a $5.75 million comprehensive capital campaign to construct a Community Waterfront Campus and Sailing Education Center that is now inclusively engaging our diverse lake-based community and inspiring new generations of lake stewards. The new sustainable-design building and yard houses education and training facilities, offices and restrooms, and public access opportunities and is an invaluable community resource for the CSC’s award winning programming and partnerships. The CSC has received national awards from US Sailing, the governing body of the sport of sailing, for 10 Years of Hallmark Performance, Creative Innovations in Programming, and an Accreditation Certification for being a top program in the country. Throughout its history, the CSC has proven to be a nationwide leader in innovative program design, providing insight and curriculum for other community sailing centers. Now, the CSC is a leader in creating a model “learning center” with the new facility as the first Net Zero energy waterfront facility of its kind and setting a precedent of sustainability for other community-based organizations.
