Mission Statement
The Himalayan Cataract Project works to cure needless blindness with the highest quality care at the lowest cost.
About This Cause
HCP works to eradicate preventable and curable blindness through high-quality ophthalmic care, education, and the establishment of a world-class eye care infrastructure. HCP is dedicated to bringing one of the most cost-effective interventions – small incision cataract surgery (SICS) – to people in the developing world, and supporting training in this practice for local practitioners. Of the more than 39 million people worldwide suffering from needless blindness, more than half are as a result of unoperated cataract. Most of these people live in the developing world, where poor nutrition and limited access to eye care can mean a life limited by needless blindness. HCP was founded by two visionary ophthalmologists, Drs. Geoff Tabin and Sanduk Ruit, who pioneered this low cost, high volume surgical technique, which can be conducted in non-hospital settings, bringing care to thousands of patients in remote areas of the world. Today, HCP and its partners conduct high volume surgical campaigns in areas of greatest need while providing hands-on training for local personnel, and support the development and equipping of eye care centers to ensure they have the technology and materials needed to provide quality care. This work helps to make care accessible in regions where the number of eye care providers is extremely low. In the U.S., there is an average of one eye surgeon for every 18,000 people. In most areas of the developing world, this number is one per million.
