About This Cause
The Columbia Slough Watershed Council achieves its mission through three program areas: Community Events, Environmental Education (Slough School), and Stewardship. The Columbia Slough is the most diverse watershed in Oregon; residents are 21% Hispanic/Latino, 11% Black or African American, 8% Asian, 4% Native American or Alaska Native, and 1.5% Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander in each neighborhood. Some neighborhoods have up to 25% of residents burdened to pay rent. These are our focus populations for whom we provide free programs to learn, explore, and enjoy the Slough. The Columbia Slough covers a large geographic area, including North and Northeast Portland, Gresham, Fairview, and Troutdale along the historic floodplains of the Columbia River. In 2023, CSWC held 114 community events, including 60 paddles, 44 naturalist events, and 17 trash cleanups. Our stewardship program installed 5,682 plants and worked with high school students working on stewardship projects to log 967 hours of youth workforce development. Slough School made 4,433 student connections, delivered 162 classroom lessons, and took students on 106 field trips and 32 paddle trips. This programming is unique and not offered elsewhere in the Portland Metro area. We intentionally partner with schools and organizations that serve those who have historically been excluded from outdoor activities. We work with our partners to address and remove barriers so everyone can access and enjoy being outdoors. These partnerships include bi-lingual birding and canoeing events, BIPOC-specific workforce development opportunities, and educational opportunities for Title I schools throughout the watershed.
