Mission Statement
True Colors Theatre Company’s mission is to celebrate the rich tradition of black storytelling while giving voice to bold artists of all cultures.
About This Cause
True Colors was founded in 2002 by Kenny Leon and Jane Bishop. After serving as the first African American Artistic Director of The Alliance Theatre, Leon, along with former Alliance Managing Director Bishop, sought to create a professional theatre company that centered African American work in its programming. In its early years, True Colors billed itself as a “moveable feast”, producing in venues around Atlanta and touring in Washington, DC and Baltimore. Since 2013, True Colors has produced all of its mainstage productions at the Southwest Arts Center. In August 2019, Kenny’s hand-picked successor Jamil Jude took on the role of Artistic Director with a vision of True Colors thriving at the intersection of artistic excellence and civic engagement. Jude is committed to addressing the underrepresentation of Black voices on the American Stage. He has launched a series of programs under the Next Narrative brand that are intended to create a pipeline of work by artists representing the diversity of the African diaspora, including multi-generational, LGBTQ, immigrant, Afro-Latino and more communities. Community events include True Talks (formerly Community Conversations) and MARTA Artbound. The company's signature education program is the Next Narrative Monologue Competition, which evolved from the August Wilson Monologue Competition, which Kenny Leon founded in 2007. NNMC is built on monologues commissioned specifically for the program by True Colors, from living Black 21st century playwrights, on topics relevant to today's high school students. The program was founded in Atlanta and is currently offered in eight cities around the country, with more in wings. Each city sends its top two competition winners to compete in the NNMC National Finals, which True Colors produces at the Apollo Theatre each year.
