Mission Statement
The mission of University Kidney Research Organization (UKRO) is fundraising to support medical research and education related to the causes of, improved treatments for, and prevention of kidney diseases. On September 19, 2012, USC Keck School of Medicine and UKRO announced they had entered into an agreement to establish and jointly fund the USC/UKRO Kidney Research Center (KRC). The USC/UKRO Kidney Research Center aspires to be a premier center nationally for kidney research. Research at the KRC will be the primary beneficiary of UKRO's fundraising for the foreseeable future.
About This Cause
UKRO is a Los Angeles-based nonprofit charity founded in 2002 by entertainment lawyer Kenneth Kleinberg and a small group of committed individuals with the instrumental leadership of Dr. Vito M. Campese, then Professor and Chief of the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension at the Keck School of Medicine of USC. In 1999, Ken Kleinberg was diagnosed with focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS), a kidney ailment that also affects children and young people. Doctors still don't know what caused Ken’s disease. His kidneys failed in 2001 and he was on dialysis for the next six years until receiving a life-saving kidney transplant in 2007. Throughout Kleinberg’s illness, Ken and Dr. Campese saw the great need to build UKRO and create a world-class kidney research center at USC to unlock the mysteries of kidney disease and improve patients’ lives. UKRO’s mission is fundraising to support medical research and education related to the causes, treatment, and eradication of all forms of kidney disease. Since 2002, UKRO has raised significant dollars to fund cutting-edge research at the earliest stage of development, in addition to educational symposia and fellowships. Our special project grants have been awarded to nationally recognized experts from interdisciplinary labs at the Keck School of Medicine of USC, City of Hope, and UCLA. We believe that collaboration among scientists working in a variety of fields is the key to understanding chronic kidney disease, discovering improved therapies, and finding a much-needed cure. To that end, in September 2012, UKRO entered into an agreement with the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California to jointly fund what we envision as a premier center nationally for kidney research—the USC/UKRO Kidney Research Center (KRC). UKRO has made an initial $3.5 million pledge to support the establishment of the KRC, and research at the KRC will be the primary beneficiary of UKRO’s fundraising for the foreseeable future.
