Mission Statement
The mission of Women's Empowerment is to educate and empower women who are experiencing homelessness with the skills and confidence necessary to secure a job, create a healthy lifestyle and regain a home for themselves and their children.
About This Cause
Women’s Empowerment was founded as a solution for breaking the generational cycle of homelessness for women and children in Sacramento. Founding Executive Director Lisa Culp worked with women experiencing homelessness and community leaders to create a curriculum to empower women to rise from homelessness to financial stability. Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, Women’s Empowerment provides a full nine-week employment-readiness and empowerment program, paid job training, childcare and support services so all women and their children can break the cycle of homelessness. Women’s Empowerment offers the most comprehensive job-readiness program in the Sacramento area designed specifically for women experiencing homelessness, and their children. Women's Empowerment has spent the last 20 years creating innovative solutions for Sacramento women and children experiencing homelessness. They have always pivoted their programs, not their mission, to meet women's most urgent needs. When the Great Recession hit, they created graduate services to ensure their graduates would be competitive job candidates. When the housing crisis intensified in 2018, they hired a housing specialist and created a paid training program in property management, a career that provides housing on the property. When the pandemic hit, they expanded their paid training programs so women could retrain in recession-resilient fields to support their families. Eighty-two percent of graduates secure a job or enroll in school. Despite the housing crisis, 75% regain a safe home for themselves and their children. The award-winning organization has graduated 1,719 women and their 3,842 children. Women’s Empowerment is funded through private donations from the community and grants.
