Mission Statement
Signature Healthcare Brockton Hospital is a private, not-for-profit, community-based teaching hospital serving more than 460,000 residents in more than 20 southeastern Massachusetts communities. Our mission is to be the leading community based healthcare delivery system in Southeastern Massachusetts, providing the full range of primary care, specialty care, hospital care and related ancillary services on a coordinated basis. Signature Healthcare physicians and Signature Healthcare Brockton Hospital strive to be recognized as “providers of choice” by staff, patients, and the community. Signature Healthcare is guided by these principles: • Take a leadership role in assessing the healthcare needs of the Metro South area by committing to a hospital-community partnership and by collaborating with other providers and community members to offer a broad range of education, health services and other activities for all patients and, in particular, the underserved and disadvantaged populations. • Develop new services and programs, and participate in alternative delivery and regional health care systems to respond to community need and enhance access to care. • Participate in the education of healthcare professionals to enhance the hospital’s access to medical expertise and to assure the most up-to-date approaches for providing care. • Commit to an electronic medical record environment aimed at (i) reducing medical errors with more accurate and timely information for providers, (ii) enhancing physician productivity and job satisfaction, (iii) responding to consumer requests for electronic communication. • Be an equitable employer that values and rewards excellence in its associates. • Manage finances aggressively to remain cost effective and fiscally sound. Part of Signature Healthcare Brockton Hospital’s community focus, and indeed the very core of our mission, is to care for those in greatest need. We are especially proud of our distinguished, century-plus tradition of reaching out to all patients in our community, from every walk of life, regardless of their ability to pay.
About This Cause
Brockton Hospital has more than 120 years of providing healthcare to the people of Brockton. In his address at the dedication of Brockton Hospital on March 14, 1896 Judge Warren A. Reed stated, “The hospital is the child of the whole people…The means of building it have drawn from the whole people…Its object is the alleviation of suffering…and shall be dedicated to the spirit of service.” That same dedication to the “spirit of service” prevails today at Signature Healthcare Brockton Hospital, one of a shrinking number of Massachusetts hospitals choosing to remain independent; seeking strategic partnerships over ownership by larger Boston-based medical centers or out-of-state for-profit health systems. Retaining our autonomy allowed us to be true to our mission of providing care for all patients seeking treatment, regardless of their financial ability or insurance status. The hospital has 216 licensed beds. In addition to medical/surgical, pediatric and obstetric services, the hospital offers inpatient and outpatient psychiatry, comprehensive oncology services including radiation therapy, cardiac catheterization, Level II nursery, magnetic resonance imaging, and digital mammography. Signature Healthcare maintains clinical partnerships for oncology and orthopedics with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) and Floating Hospital for Children at Tufts Medical Center for pediatrics. We are also affiliated with BIDMC as a teaching hospital. As a result of our strategic acquisition of Bridgewater Goddard Park Medical Associates primary and specialty care group in 2008, Signature Healthcare was formed. With Brockton Hospital as the hub, Signature Healthcare services Brockton and 21 surrounding cities and towns. Our network encompasses a multi-specialty physician group of more than 150 employed physicians practicing in 18 ambulatory locations throughout the region. Our Patients The City of Brockton, Massachusetts, population 96,313, is an ethnically diverse majority-minority community: 42.3 % are Black or African American, 39.8.% White, 12.14% Some Other Race, 3.69% Two or More Races, 1.65% Asian, .29% American Indian and Alaska Native and .06 Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander (2018 ACS). 55.23% of Brockton residents speak only English, while 44.77% speak other languages. The non-English language spoken by the largest group is Other Indo-European, which is spoken by 33.60% of the population. Approximately 9% of Brockton residents have Cape Verdean ancestry. As a disproportionate share hospital, approximately 72% of Signature Healthcare’s patients have government insurance plans including Medicaid, Medicare, and other insurance products provided by the state of Massachusetts. All of these plans provide reimbursement at less than cost. Medicaid, for instance, which accounts for nearly 25% of our volume, pays us 68 cents for each dollar of care. Award Winning Quality and Safety – Our Differentiator Signature Healthcare has achieved tremendous accomplishments and is recognized nationally as a leader in quality and safety. Healthcare organizations from across the country are reaching out to benchmark our success and are surprised when they learn we are a stand-alone disproportionate share community hospital and not a well-endowed academic medical center. Signature’s focus and record for quality and safety sets us apart and independent, third-party recognition is affirming our status: • Leapfrog, the nation’s leading authority on hospital quality and safety, awarded us straight A’s for 17consecutive evaluation periods – one of only a small group of hospitals in the country to achieve such an honor • In 2020, for the fourth straight year, we were recognized by Leapfrog as a Top Teaching Hospital, one of only two hospitals in Massachusetts to receive this award • Press Gainey’s recent book “ZERO HARM” recognized Signature Healthcare for integrating a Culture of Safety with its Lean process improvement platform to establish a “high-reliability organizational structure” Our pure passion for ZERO patient harm, ZERO employee harm and the desire to be a high-reliability healthcare organization drives our culture of quality and safety initiatives. We continuously receive national awards related to care of patients with Stroke, breast diseases, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Pneumonia, and heart failure. Through focused efforts we have also dropped our recordable employee injury rate from three times higher than industry standard to below the national average as we strive to eliminate all employee injuries.
