About This Cause
The Community House is dedicated to enrichment through arts and events that promote togetherness and strengthen the community. This non-profit 501c3 organization brings the community together through cultural, educational, and recreational programs. Program offerings include a significant emphasis on the arts through programs such as Stage 284, Sing and Dance with the Music Man, and the Sundays in Patton Park summer series. In addition, we focus on special events that build community spirit such as the Community Block Party, and the annual Christmas Carol Sing Along and Tree Lighting. In 1921, George and Emily Mandell of Hamilton built The Community House in memory of eight men from both towns who died in military service during World War I. They gave The Community House in trust for the use of residents of both Hamilton and Wenham. Originally known as Community Service of Hamilton and Wenham, Inc., the organization began as part of a larger national civic organization, a private non-profit, titled Community Service. This national movement grew out of a desire to support programs that would benefit local citizens and encourage community after the war. By 1923, over 800 cities and town had active Community Service organizations. Few service organizations have survived, and the Hamilton-Wenham organization, is the only one of its kind on the North Shore of Massachusetts.
