Mission Statement
The United Way of Tri-County increases the organized capacity of people to care for one another.
About This Cause
The United Way of Tri-County (UWTC) was incorporated in 1997 through the merging of five Massachusetts United Way organizations: the United Way of Assabet Valley, United Way of Neponset Valley, the United Way of Metrowest, the Westborough United Way, and the Clinton Community United Way. Today, UWTC provides services to thousands of our neighbors and friends in 34 communities throughout Norfolk, Middlesex, and Worcester Counties. UWTC is different from many other United Ways as we don't just "funnel" money to other people serving agencies but instead, we also run our own direct service programs. UWTC owns and operates three food pantries and two hot meal programs - Pearl Street Cupboard & Cafe in Framingham, Marlborough Community Cupboard and WHEAT Community Cupboard & Cafe. In 2021, we distributed over 3 million pounds of food in monthly groceries and over 100,000 hot meals were prepared and provided to the most vulnerable people in the Metrowest/495 communities. In addition, over 2,000 families received full holiday meals they could cook in the comfort of their home at Thanksgiving. UWTC also addresses the needs of economically disadvantaged children through three program - Tools for School, Ready to Read & Hope for the Holidays. UWTC’s Tools for School program is a collaborative effort between businesses and individuals to provide children in grades K-12 with new backpacks full of grade-specific school supplies from crayons to calculators and everything in between. In 2021, 1,059 children from 23 locations received fully stocked, brand new backpacks to begin their school year. Ready to Read is the UWTC's early literacy initiative which provides economically disadvantaged children between the ages 0-5 with 12 new books each year (72 in total) to keep on their shelves at home. By putting books directly into the hands and homes of young children, Ready to Read helps them develop the skills they need to achieve academic success in all subjects, graduate from high school on time, attend college and begin a strong career path. In 2021, 30 children received 360 books and another 352 children received literacy kits. Hope for the Holidays helps struggling families by providing a bag of holiday gifts for children, teens and adults with special needs. In 2021, almost 2,000 children received gifts through UWTC's Hope for the Holidays program. Since 2006, the United Way has funded and operated Mass2-1-1, a statewide information and referral line available 24/7 to connect callers to critical social service programs and organizations in their community. Mass2-1-1 can be reached by dialing 2-1-1 from any landline or mobile telephone in the state. Its continuously-updated resource database is also available online. Mass2-1-1 is the official hotline for emergency information through its partnership with the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency, the official hotline for child care through its partnership with the MA Department of Early Education and Care and the official hotline for Children Requiring Assistance and the Runaway Assistance Program through its partnership with the MA Executive Office of Health and Human Services. The impact of Mass2-1-1 is far-reaching. Children can be enrolled in quality childcare programs to increase school readiness. Families can maintain housing and the stability that comes with having a roof over their head and a safe, comfortable home. People can find food pantries and community meals to support health and nutrition. Individuals can find local services from job training programs to support groups. When combined, these factors afford all people the opportunity to thrive. Call2Talk is the Mental health helpline of Mass2-1-1 powered by your UWTC. Call2Talk answers calls through Mass2-1-1, its direct telephone line and the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. It also answers texts in partnership with Crisis Text Line. Communities with helplines demonstrate a reduced burden to first responders for self-inflicted injuries. The United Way of Tri-County founded the Call2Talk program in 2014 to provide a confidential and lifesaving service which offers support to people experiencing emotional distress or potential suicidal ideation and have nowhere else to turn.
