About This Cause

Pingree is an independent, coeducational secondary day school serving the large geographic area north and east of Boston. Its students commute from 45 different cities and towns, from as far south as Arlington, as far north as Southern New Hampshire and as far west as the Merrimack Valley. In 1960, Mr. and Mrs. Sumner Pingree gave their home and fifty acres of land as the site of a school. Pingree opened the following year with 50 girls, and in 1971 the school became coeducational. The development of Pingree's physical plan has demonstrated the school's recognition that it must provide the best possible facilities to support a strong educational program. Four capital drives have allowed the addition of the library (1966); a science wing and cafeteria (1969); the Weld Field House, a modern kitchen, locker rooms and two classrooms (1977); the Mary Weld Pingree Center for the Performing Arts, which houses a 425-seat theatre, art rooms, music rooms and additional classrooms, was completed. The H. Alden Johnson, Jr. Rink was finished in time for the 1988-1989 hockey season. In the fall of the 2000-2001 school year, construction was completed on a major addition to the library, additional classrooms and student space, as well as extensive renovation of the dining facilities. In September 2004, a new Academic Center opened, expanding Pingree's physical plant in a beautiful facility consisting of over 25,000 square feet of state-of-the-art teaching and learning space. With an enrollment of approximately 335 students, Pingree is committed to its identity as a small day school which is proud of its high standards and which stresses an educational program directed to the diverse needs of the adolescent years.
