About This Cause

PLS’ mission is to challenge the carceral system through litigation, advocacy, client counseling, partnership with impacted individuals and communities, and outreach to policymakers and the public in order to promote the human rights of incarcerated persons and end harmful confinement. Our work is focused on five key priorities: Healthcare, Conditions of Confinement, Solitary Confinement, Brutality, and Racial Equity in Corrections. Our work is client-centered, and our long-term goal is to dismantle the racial discriminatory practices that have led to and that continue to perpetuate mass incarceration. PLS’ core litigation activities seek relief for prisoners whose medical needs, including mental health needs, are ignored or otherwise improperly treated, who are beaten by staff members, and who suffer from unconstitutional conditions of confinement such as being forced to sleep on the floor for lack of bed space, lack of adequate bathrooms or showers, or are confined for long periods to segregation units which permit prisoners out of their cells only an hour a day, 5 days per week. The office also refers matters to the private bar, frequently advises on such matters, and cooperates on advocacy and major litigation with other legal services offices.
