About This Cause

2Life is a non-profit, non-sectarian organization that was founded in 1965 and has since established itself as the premier provider of affordable, supportive, independent senior housing in Massachusetts. Today, ~1,600 low-income older adults from ALL backgrounds live in their own apartments on 2Life campuses located in Brighton, Newton, Framingham, and Brookline. Residents come from 36 countries and speak 18 primary languages (39% Russian; 31% Mandarin/Cantonese). The average age is 80; one-third are 85+. The median household income of 2Life residents in subsidized units is $11,325 (~94% of households). 2Life’s programs sustain senior independence and create community. Intergenerational activities and cultural events promote social interaction, creative expression and intellectual stimulation. Supportive services include fitness and fall prevention, 24/7 on-site staffing, resident service coordination, programming for people experiencing cognitive decline, and for our frailest, in-home services and case management. State-of-the art facilities feature senior-specialized fitness centers, computer centers, libraries, auditoriums, and art rooms. The pandemic permanently accelerated the primacy of technology and we are actively pursuing equitable access to digital technology for residents, including telehealth/telemedicine. New partnerships with healthcare providers and insurers are helping us integrate housing and healthcare onsite, which promises to improve care coordination and health outcomes. Our goal is to help our residents, many of whom have physical and cognitive disabilities, to live independently and age with dignity in community for as long as possible. One measure of our success is our very low move-out to higher levels of care annual rate of 2%. 2Life’s commitment to aging in community as a preferred choice for successful aging is reinforced by the recent explosion of research-based evidence connecting chronic loneliness with physical illness and functional and cognitive decline. In fact, we are transforming all of our existing and future campuses into village centers—hubs of exciting intergenerational activity with community-oriented retail, programming, and public open spaces—with the goal of adding to the vibrancy of our residents’ lives as well as to the communities in which they live. 2Life is the ultimate safety net for older adults in our community. Massachusetts is 50th of the 50 states (the worst) in the gap between seniors’ median income and the amount of money needed for a basic standard of living, with fully 62% of single older adults not having sufficient resources for basic necessities. Housing is the biggest cause of and solution to elder poverty. To address the urgent and growing need for affordable housing for older adults, 2Life is rapidly expanding throughout greater Boston. From 2019-2020, we added 123 apartments between our Brighton campus and a new location in Brookline. In 2021, we begin construction on a 68-unit expansion of our Newton Golda Meir House and a 142-unit addition in Brighton. Projects in the pipeline include ~150 affordable units in Lynn on the Union Hospital site and 68 apartments in Waltham at the former Leland House rest home. We rely on the generosity of philanthropy to support the services and programs that help our residents age with dignity.
