About This Cause

Founded in 1968, Sociedad Latina is Boston’s oldest Latino youth organization. Our mission is to work in partnership with youth and families to create the next generation of Latino leaders who are confident, competent, self-sustaining and proud of their cultural heritage. We are deeply embedded in the fabric of the community and are positioned to respond quickly and effectively to shifting needs. For nearly 50 years, Sociedad Latina has served Latino and Mission Hill/Roxbury youth and families, pioneering innovative solutions to end the destructive cycles of poverty, racism, and lack of educational and professional opportunities that persist in Boston. Sociedad Latina promotes Latino leadership and creates a Boston community that supports youth success through our holistic “Pathways to Success” positive youth development model. We provide young people ages 11-21 with ongoing training and support to develop their leadership skills and offer real-life opportunities to put their learning into practice. Moreover, the model serves as a structure to motivate and empower youth to map their own progress towards college, career and community leadership. Through Pathways to Success, we connect youth to ten years of intensive, free, year-round programming that uses culturally and linguistically responsive and sustaining practices to capitalize on strengths and assets, such as bilingualism, high aspirations, resiliency and strong family and community ties. Our approach works in partnership with families and a wide network of cross-sector partners to build young people’s skills and knowledge in the following areas: • EDUCATION: Supports youth and their families on the journey from middle school through high school and on to college, with expertise in working with English learners. • CIVIC ENGAGEMENT: Elevates grassroots Latino leadership on issues affecting youth lives and opportunities, such as education reform, health inequity and immigration. • WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT: Prepares youth for careers in robust fields where Latinos are underrepresented, including healthcare, public service, the arts, STEM and entrepreneurship. • ARTS & CULTURE: Offers high-quality opportunities to create and experience art in a range of artistic disciplines, with a focus on Latino cultural traditions. Sociedad Latina differentiates ourselves as a Latino organization, with curricula, events, staff and an organizational philosophy built on a deep understanding and valuing of Latino culture and the assets that Latino youth and families bring. All instruction and materials are in English and Spanish and our curricula explore and celebrate the cultural and linguistic backgrounds and experiences of youth through relevant examples and topics. Through this approach, we support youth to develop positive cultural identities that serve as protective factors, promote resiliency and continue Latino cultural traditions in our community. We also utilize the following positive youth development strategies to mitigate social vulnerability amongst the youth and families in our programs: 1) Capitalize on youth and family assets, including bilingualism, high aspirations and strong community ties; 2) Make holistic investments in youth and families, partnering from grade 6 through the first two years of college or career; 3) Affirm positive cultural identities that build resiliency and continue Latino cultural traditions in our community; 4) Elevate youth voice in decision-making processes that affect their lives, opportunities and communities; 5) Support the development of social-emotional skills that foster youth leadership and long-term success; 6) Provide flexible pathways that ensure all youth graduate from high school with the next steps that are right for them; and 7) Engage families across the organization, recognizing that they are the single most important factor in youth success.
