Mission Statement
To provide legal advocacy on disability issues that promote the fundamental rights of all people with disabilities to participate fully and equally in the social and economic life of Massachusetts.
About This Cause
The Disability Law Center (DLC) is the federally mandated Protection and Advocacy (P&A) agency for Massachusetts. As the state's P&A, DLC is responsible for providing protection and advocacy for the rights of Massachusetts residents with disabilities. The P&A system is a national network of disability rights agencies investigating abuse and neglect and providing legal representation and other advocacy services to people with disabilities. As a private, non-profit organization, DLC receives federal, state and private funding. DLC's core function is to keep people with disabilities safe from abuse and neglect where they live and where they receive services. DLC does this by monitoring for abuse and neglect as well as investigating allegations of abuse and neglect. DLC also uses the courts and other legal forums to bring about systemic reform on behalf of people with disabilities. DLC's legally-based systems advocacy encompasses cases in the following areas: human rights, education, access to employment, health care, community inclusion, self-determination, voting rights, and community legal aid for victims of crimes. Our 2019 priority document expands upon DLC's priorities at https://www.dlc-ma.org/priorities/.
