Mission Statement

Promoting and assisting the work of the Harvard University Band.

About This Cause

The Harvard Band Foundation, Inc. (HBF) is an all-volunteer, publicly-supported charity whose purpose is “promoting and assisting the work of the Harvard University Band” (Federal Tax ID #04-3009105, office address at 74 Mount Auburn Street, Cambridge MA 02138) “including the work of the Band as a marching, concert, and jazz ensemble” (according to the HBF’s Articles of Organization). The HBF is governed and run by a board of directors. There is no class of members. Almost every board member and officer is an alumnus or alumna of the Harvard University Marching Band, Concert Band (n/k/a Wind Ensemble), or Jazz Band. The Band’s student Manager (chief executive) and its faculty director are members of the HBF board ex officio. The HBF maintains an endowment and makes grants to the Band at least semi-annually for special projects, travel, purchase of instruments, commissioning of new music, sponsorship of concerts, and a wide range of other activity that cannot be funded by the Band’s own budget. Grant requests are written by its Manager and student officers (the Senior Staff) and by its faculty director. The HBF reviews the progress and success of the activities it funds at the fall and spring meetings of its directors. In addition to making grants to the Band, the HBF provides advice and counsel on the management of a non-profit organization, including the recruitment and retention of members, relations with alumni/ae, fundraising, and future planning. Were it not for the HBF, these services (like the items funded through its grants) would have to be provided by the Band itself.
