Mission Statement
Our mission is to support and enhance the well-being of older adults in Dedham by promoting community engagement with the Council on Aging, fostering intergenerational connection, and providing financial resources to advance programs at the Ames Senior Center and in the broader community. As a volunteer-run nonprofit incorporated in 1986, the Friends of the Dedham Council on Aging, Inc. proudly partners with the Town’s Council on Aging to enrich the lives of residents age 55 and older. We raise funds and awareness for senior programs, transportation access, nutritional support, community events, and more. After a decade-long dormancy, FDCOA was reactivated by community members committed to honoring our legacy and meeting today’s evolving needs. Our focus now includes intergenerational connection, dignity in aging, and equitable access to local resources. From musical events to educational outreach and community fundraisers, we believe in brightening the way to a better day—for every senior, neighbor, and friend.
About This Cause
Who We Are The Friends of the Dedham Council on Aging, Inc. (FDCOA) is an any-age, volunteer-run nonprofit organization founded in 1986 to support and enhance the work of the Dedham Council on Aging and Ames Senior Center. We focus on enriching the lives of residents age 55 and older through advocacy, fundraising, and community-driven initiatives. What We Do FDCOA provides financial and volunteer support for services and events that bring seniors comfort, connection, and joy. Our core activities include: - Funding the monthly Council on Aging newsletter mailings - Underwriting musical and cultural events that reduce isolation and spark joy - Supporting food and transportation-related initiatives for seniors in need - Hosting creative fundraisers such as themed concerts, restaurant benefit nights, and seasonal outreach at farmers markets and street fairs Our Values We believe that every older adult deserves dignity, community connection, and meaningful opportunities to engage with the world around them. As an intergeneration-friendly organization, we foster relationships that bring together residents across all ages in support of one another. Our Recent Journey After nearly a decade of organizational dormancy, FDCOA was revived in 2024 by a group of dedicated community members. Since then, we’ve modernized our systems, built strategic relationships, launched successful fundraisers, and reignited the community’s commitment to its older neighbors. We also launched “Being Friendly,” a recurring public-access TV program produced in partnership with Dedham TV. The show highlights our initiatives, promotes senior-centered resources, and brings our mission into local homes—especially for residents who may be homebound or offline. Why It Matters Dedham is the only community in Norfolk County without a full-time social worker at its Council on Aging. We’re working to change that—while also funding the activities that bring daily quality of life to seniors across town. Whether it’s a warm holiday meal, a newsletter with timely info, or a ride to the doctor’s office, our mission is to brighten the way to a better day for Dedham’s aging population. How You Can Help Supporters can make a lasting difference by: - Volunteering time or skills - Logging volunteer hours through their employer's giving program - Donating through Benevity or directly via Zeffy.com (our 100% fee-free platform) - Spreading awareness of our mission in local networks
