Habitat for Humanity Greater Boston is a Massachusetts nonprofit organization dedicated to building simple low-cost homes by forming partnerships with low-income families in need of decent and affordable housing. We believe homeownership is a vital step to help families break the cycle of poverty and contributes to pride in families and communities. Our vision: A world where everyone has a decent place to live.
About This Cause
Habitat Greater Boston is a 501 (c)(3) charitable organization. Our projects are funded primarily by private donations from individuals, community groups, corporations, charities, foundations, faith based organizations and institutions. Habitat for Humanity Greater Boston is an independent affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, responsible for its own fundraising and operational management. Charitable support helps local lower-income families become homeowners and it builds a community where everyone has a safe and affordable place to call home. Our Program: Through volunteer labor and tax-deductible charitable donations Habitat Greater Boston builds simple and affordable houses (mostly townhouse style) for local hardworking families. Partner families are selected based on their level of need, willingness to partner, and ability to pay a low interest mortgage. Families are expected to complete 300 hours of sweat equity by helping to construct their future home or working in other capacities alongside staff, volunteers, and supporters. They also participate in homeowner education classes such as financial and estate planning and condo association management to name a few. Qualified families purchase homes with no down payment and pay an interest-free mortgage directly to Habitat Greater Boston, which enables them to afford owning their own home.
