Mission Statement

The Turimiquire Foundation supports human service and environmental projects in the Turimiquire watershed of northeastern Venezuela, with an emphasis on family planning, rural education and sustainable livelihood. Turimiquire, pronounced Too-ree-mee-kee-ray, means “Seat of the Gods" in the indigenous Carib language.

About This Cause

The Turimiquire Foundation is a US-based 501(c)3 non-profit organization that has served the low-income population of Sucre state in northeastern Venezuela since 1996. With 28 years of experience, we believe that small, community-based experiments like our own offer a particularly effective pathway towards realizing the Seventeen Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the United Nations for the year 2030. Our Recipe for a Thriving Community defines our mission and work in four key areas: Health and Women: The first and crucial step towards truly empowering women is to offer them the means to control their fertility. Since 1997, we have supported family planning in a wide range of public hospitals, private clinics, and walk-in public health facilities. We supply contraceptives, educational materials, staff and administrative support for family planning services and reproductive health workshops. Through 2023, we have provided 276,700+ Couple Years of Protection, the metric by which USAID measures family planning achievement, to more than 81,000 low- income rural and urban women and their families. We have also offered more than 4500 Sexual and Reproductive Health Workshops to 96,500+ student and adult participants. All services are implemented by Venezuelan health care professionals in accordance with Venezuelan public health policies. In a country whose population has more than quadrupled over the past 50 years, the unmet need for family planning remains enormous. Humanitarian Aid In primary and secondary care, we have offered 20,000+ medical consultations focusing primarily on family planning and reproductive health, including family and internal medicine, ENT, cardiology, oncology, pediatrics, geriatrics, imaging, and lab work. And we have realized 15,000+ surgical procedures for low-income individuals, including tubal sterilizations, hernia repairs, and various OB-GYN, ENT, orthopedic, oncological and pediatric interventions. Despite the adverse circumstances in the country, we have been able to increase our medical services to Venezuela's ever more vulnerable families, women and youth. Education and Children: Once families gain control of their fertility, they concentrate on giving their children the best possible future through schooling. We support students in remote rural areas and marginal urban barrios through scholarships for high school and community college, and with educational and cultural programs at our rural Community Center and at our urban headquarters, Casa ServYr. Over 500 of our students have graduated from high school, we have 10 students in college, and five college graduates! We are enabling a generation of rural children whose parents are semi-literate campesinos to go to high school and even all the way to college in one generation. Sustainable Livelihood: We focus on environmentally sensitive rural community development, introducing low-impact utilities like solar electricity and gravity water systems, and promoting ecological agriculture, generating tools and self-sustaining employment for an enduring rural future. We have installed more than 30 solar (photovoltaic) electric systems for rural families, including the local school and chapel; and have installed and maintain an extensive gravity piped water system, providing over 120 dispersed rural households with clean water from the many crystalline mountain streams that feed into the river valley. We have introduced and disseminated a wide range of fruit trees that are new to the region, including Mangosteen, Durian, Rollinia, and Jackfruit, in order to expand the local food base, contribute to the local economy, and foster self-employment for the valley rural population.
