Mission Statement

AppleTree Institute for Education Innovation is an entrepreneurial Washington, DC-based nonprofit that develops and provides research-based early childhood education programs to the most vulnerable three- and four-year-old children. AppleTree’s mission is to close the achievement gap before students enter kindergarten by providing them with the social, emotional, and cognitive skills they need to thrive in school.

About This Cause

AppleTree Institute for Education Innovation (AppleTree) is a non-profit organization consisting of a research institute and a network of exemplary charter preschools in Washington, DC working at the intersection of research, policy and practice. AppleTree erases the achievement gap before children enter kindergarten by providing the most vulnerable young children with the social, emotional, and cognitive foundations they need to thrive in school. AppleTree operates evidence-based preschools and supports other preschools and community based organizations in providing effective teaching and learning. AppleTree has developed and implemented a comprehensive, evidence-based instructional model, Every Child Ready, used by over 2,100 three- and four-year-olds at AppleTree's 10 preschools and nine partners. The Every Child Ready instructional model has three tightly integrated elements -- curriculum, professional development, and assessment: 1.) What to teach: A three-tiered, 12-unit core curriculum for both preschoolers and pre-kindergartners, including an extensive set of AppleTree published trade books, and comprehensive, 3-tiered flexible small group plans for literacy, language, math, and social-emotional development. 2.) How to teach: A year-round training program for teachers and school leaders that includes summer sessions, regular mentoring, video exemplars tied to the curriculum, and in-class observation and feedback. 3.) How to tell it’s being done: An array of assessment tools that measure classroom effectiveness as well as individual students’ academic and social progress, allowing content and teaching to be adjusted to meet students’ unique needs. RESULTS: Children who graduate from AppleTree with the strong academic and social skills needed to succeed in kindergarten and beyond. In fact, they demonstrate greater mastery of early literacy, oral reading, and math than their non-AppleTree peers. Children who enter AppleTree below grade level typically graduate at or above it, as measured by recognized assessments. Compared to non-AppleTree peers, AppleTree alumni: - Recognize 25% more letters in kindergarten - Score 20 points higher on oral reading tests in 1st grade - Score 70% higher in oral reading tests by 2nd grade Children at-risk for reading and math difficulties for a variety of reasons benefit the most, showing greater growth in literacy and math skills after participating in Every Child Ready. Why does it matter? An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. It is commonly known that research shows that evidence-based early-interventions are effective at closing achievement gaps before kindergarten. In the short term, they are shown to reduce grade retention, special education placements, and remedial education, while improving graduation rates. Long-term, they are associated with improved education, health, economic, and life outcomes.
