Mission Statement
Our mission is to ensure that all students, from pre-k through high school, have the basic supplies and creative tools for literacy, STEAM, and health education through the environmentally-conscious distribution of donated business supplies.
About This Cause
Since 1994 3Rs has given away over $110 million in new and reusable office supplies, art materials, STEAM and hands-on learning materials, books, furniture, and computers to schools in Maine and New Hampshire. This includes more than 55,000 backpacks filled with school supplies and distributed to low income students. 3Rs has also diverted tons of materials from landfills by reusing, repurposing or recycling donated items. Recently 83% of Maine teachers surveyed said that access to the supplies at 3Rs is very important to their daily classroom activities. The majority of those teachers also reported the supplies have a positive impact on class participation and interest in learning. Many teachers have reported that being able to give students their own supplies to keep makes an incredible difference in the student's motivation and interest in learning. The playing field is evened when all students have the necessary supplies. 3Rs makes available a variety of materials by taking things that businesses throw out and repurposing them for use in schools. Teachers report that the variety of unique items available at 3Rs allows them to assign projects they otherwise could not. Students in South Portland Middle School, for example, used materials from 3Rs to build roller coasters. This type of hands on learning is critical for developing problem solving and other skills, but the materials needed are often eliminated from school budgets. The magnitude and value of what 3Rs does cannot be overstated. Studies show that the average teacher spends $500 of their own money each year to buy supplies for their classrooms. Many teachers have come to depend on 3Rs for even basic classroom supplies. Without 3Rs many teachers would be forced to choose between spending their own money or going without items they need in their classrooms. Students whose parents cannot afford school supplies would too often attend school unprepared to learn and unable to complete homework assignments.
