Mission Statement

The Riecken Foundation creates and supports community libraries in the poorest farm villages of Guatemala and Honduras, promoting prosperity, democracy, and a spirit of discovery through access to information and community action.

About This Cause

In today’s knowledge-based world, Riecken Libraries provide poor communities with a priceless commodity: information. Our vision is to use knowledge to open the door to individual opportunity, community development, and the transformation of developing nations. While promoting child literacy, a love of reading and the understanding of new technologies, they open the doors to innovation and imagination. Our organization lays the framework for community-run lending libraries with open stacks of books and free Internet access, while the success of the library network hinges on the active involvement of local committees and volunteers. Leadership training and community service are key components of the Riecken Library model. Signature programs, including reading promotion, youth leadership workshops and Internet research instruction, are supplemented by services customized to meet local needs. For some communities, that means prenatal classes and teen debate clubs. For others, it is carpentry workshops or parenting classes.
