Mission Statement

Unlocking each child's potential through the foundation of reading.

About This Cause

ESLC envisions a community in which “all children read with pride and joy to become life-long learners.” The organization aims to provide children with the literacy and social-emotional skills required to be successful in school, graduate, and become productive members of society. ESLC’s outcome goals are: • Each child reads at grade level by third grade. • Each child increases social-emotional capacity so they succeed in school. ESLC’s programs bring together the community, teachers, and parents to support struggling readers in two core programs: 1) The Intervention Program supports first through third graders so they can catch up to grade-level in reading while also supporting social-emotional skills development. 2) The Prevention Program prepares PreK and Kindergarten children for school success by focusing on foundational literacy, oral, and social-emotional skills. Each child participates in two to four, 20- to 30-minute, one-on-one tutoring sessions per week during or after school and/or over the summer. The evidence-based program incorporates: • Rigorous lessons provide each child with essential foundational literacy skills. • Structured session plans with a specific skill focus, time for the child to read independently, guided instruction, and reflection for the child to assess their progress. • Active learning, literacy games, and a read-aloud with emphasis on student choice. • Activities to create a trusting relationship with the Literacy Mentor. • Social emotional coaching when a child wants to give up because it is hard, confidence building activities, and communication skills practice so the child voices needs or ideas. • A strengths-based approach that incorporates a deep respect for each child as a person, and for the child’s family, culture, and language. ESLC is a locally founded program that is unique in the Twin Cities because of it's unwavering commitment to each child's uniqueness in its program model: • Every student interaction and location are guided by a licensed educator. • Tutors commit to work with the same children for the entire year. • Programming incorporates all five pillars of literacy: phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. • Sessions are individualized based on progress monitoring, nationally normed assessments, and feedback from teachers, tutors, family, and the child. • Tutoring is primarily provided by AARP Foundation Experience Corps volunteers (community elders sometimes referred to as senior citizens). Although services were cut short in last year due to the pandemic, 88% of children who completed the program through January 31, 2020, and were assessed twice by teachers increased foundational reading skills. Plus: • 83% (125/150) of PreK and Kindergarten children were on target in reading. • 66% (105/159) of elementary children attained their reading goals. • Social emotional data was unavailable due to the pandemic, but the previous year 70% of children with low ratings on social emotional skills improved by the end of the year. In summary, ESLC addresses the learning gap by providing structured, “hands-on, learner-focused” literacy support for children who are behind in reading but cannot afford to pay for private tutoring. Of the children for whom data was available last year, more than 50% were dual language learners, and at least: • 88% of lived in extreme poverty. • 90% were children of color.
