Mission Statement

Post 58 provides challenging outdoor experiences for a diverse group of high school students at very low cost. The organization is largely student run and offers over 30 trips per year, exposing these students to outdoors and wilderness challenges.

About This Cause

Post 58 was formed in 1993 and currently has 115 student members, 36 volunteer adult advisors and is largely student run. The Post offers 30+ trips per year, community service projects and fundraisers. In its history the Post has run more than a thousand trips, with an emphasis on mountaineering, back packing and rock climbing. The organization has an outstanding safety record, and provides extensive professional training to its adult advisors. Student members pay just $65 a year, and trips expenses are limited to the cost of gas and food. The Post is run by a 16 member student steering committee that meets once per month to plan activities, set policies and organize the general meeting of the membership -- which occurs once each month. Student members have various training opportunities each year. Among these are a one-day basic rock school, a two-day leading on rock school, a snow school, a six month leadership course and periodic opportunities to participate in first aid, crevasse rescue or avalanche seminars. Students sign up for weekend trips at the monthly meetings. Each summer about 14 trips are offered and students sign up for these through an on-line system. The Post offers international trips periodically. Trips to New Zealand have been offered five times, to Canada 20 times, and once to Everest Base Camp in Nepal. These are also offered at the lowest cost possible.
