Mission Statement
Watkinson School is Hartford’s only a co-educational, college preparatory day school. The student body is made up of 244 students in grades 6 – 12 from 40 towns in Greater Hartford area of Connecticut, four towns in Massachusetts, and three foreign countries. Our students reflect a wide range of academic, personal and socioeconomic backgrounds. Watkinson’s mission is, “to develop in our students the power to shape their lives and the world around them.” Watkinson’s philosophy is not to make students more like each other but to help them make the most of themselves. We demonstrate this through our rigorous commitment to individuality.
About This Cause
PROGRAMS and ACTIVITIES Watkinson School’s academic program is designed around the idea that with small classes (on average, 14 per class) and small teacher loads (6 students per teacher), heterogeneous classrooms are the best source of stimulation and collaboration. The small classroom settings have created an atmosphere of an “anxious-free expectation” where students are encouraged to think critically and creatively. Watkinson also provides a wide variety of opportunities inside and outside the classroom through extensive arts, athletics and technology-based programs. Watkinson School’s rigorous college-preparatory curriculum demands that we keep the “bar” high for every student in every class. A focus on the individual is the key; the knowledge of each student’s learning style is essential to helping the student realize academic and personal success. ORGANIZATIONAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS A central and defining characteristic of Watkinson School is its commitment to serve a widely diverse student body. Approximately 35% of Watkinson students receive financial aid, offered in the form of direct grants. Although Watkinson makes every effort to meet financial aid requests, funds are limited and are awarded on the basis of availability, need, academic performance, academic promise, and the student’s potential contribution to the school community. The school’s longstanding commitment to financial aid comes almost entirely from our operating budget. The Watkinson Community is committed to aggressively affirming the dignity, value, and uniqueness of each person. We strive to maintain a community that reflects the diverse perspectives and backgrounds. We believe in creating a school community of students, faculty, staff, trustees, and alumnae where justice and equity for all people live in our words and actions. Currently, twenty-two percent of students are of color, creating a rich and purposeful heterogeneous community. Both statistics greatly exceed the national and regional averages for independent schools.
