Mission Statement

Hartford’s Camp Courant is a youth development organization and the oldest and largest FREE summer day camp in the nation. Camp Courant’s mission is to provide Hartford children equal opportunity to participate in recreational and educational experiences that balance fun with enrichment while expanding horizons, instilling confidence, promoting healthy lifestyle choices, and inspiring big dreams for the future. At Camp Courant, we believe summer camp can be a transformative experience that alters the trajectory of a child’s life. We believe every child, regardless of economic or social circumstances, deserves the opportunity to have fun, learn, make friends, and be mentored in a safe, happy environment that creates a sense of wellbeing and a sense of belonging. We believe active learning, fun activities, and being outdoors in nature promote positive youth development and build life skills. We believe urban youth who have the opportunity to get out of their city environment and into a serene outdoor setting will experience a sense of wonder and also a sense of possibility that every child deserves. We believe that making active learning and fun activities during summer accessible to those who cannot afford camp is one way to level the playing field for Hartford children. In carrying out our mission, the staff, volunteers, and board of Camp Courant are guided by the following core values: • Equal opportunity • Inclusiveness • Integrity • Respect • Fun • Community • Collaboration • Environmental stewardship

About This Cause

Founded in 1894, Hartford’s Camp Courant is the oldest and largest FREE summer day program in the nation, providing six weeks of summer fun and learning for children, ages 5 through 12, who reside in the city of Hartford. Our ‘camperships’ provide transportation, preventive and acute health services, two nutritious meals a day, and recreational, educational and developmental activities, all at no cost to the camper or his or her family. In 2018, Hartford's Camp Courant served a total of 981 children, averaging 650 campers each day. Camp’s mission is grounded in the central premise that fun yet educational experiences will have a positive and lifelong impact on our young campers, many of whom lack structured programming during the summer months. As a youth development organization, we combine traditional camp activities with enrichment programming that exposes our campers to ideas and opportunities which spark their imaginations and inspires them to be their best in a safe, nurturing, fresh-air setting.
