About This Cause
The Sexual Assault Crisis Center of Eastern Connecticut is a private, 501(c)(3) crisis intervention agency that has been providing services to victims of sexual assault and sexual abuse since 1974. Our catchment area includes Windham County, New London County, and the towns of Columbia, Coventry, Mansfield, Union and Willington in eastern Connecticut. The Crisis Center serves all members of the community regardless of race, religion, sex, national origin, citizenship, age, sexual orientation or physical or mental disability. During fiscal year 2021-2022 SACCEC provided crisis intervention and counseling services to 735 individuals in our forty-one town catchment area. The majority of our clients were female, comprising 81% of the clients that we served. Our clients ranged in age from two years to age seventy-eight. SACCEC’s foremost priority is to ensure that our community members have immediate access to support, information and accompaniment in the aftermath of an incident of sexual violence or abuse. We provide 24 hour accompaniment during medical, police and legal processes. Our certified advocates and counselors can assist clients in making informed decisions by providing information regarding such matters as medical exams, safety issues, evidence collection and what to anticipate regarding the legal process, date rape drug testing and sexually transmitted diseases. Advocacy Services include victim compensation claim assistance, criminal justice support and accompaniment, and Address Confidentiality Program assistance. Counseling is available for adult survivors, children, adolescents, parents and caregivers. All information shared with our counselors remains confidential. There are no fees for our services. Counseling is provided at both our New London (860-442-0604) and Willimantic (860-456-3595) offices, by appointment. The Sexual Assault Crisis Center provides community education and violence prevention programs to schools, professionals and the public regarding primary prevention, risk reduction, sexual harassment, bullying, sexual assault, healthy relationships and child sexual abuse. Child Advocacy Centers (CACs) are multidisciplinary partnerships of professionals established for the investigation of allegations of child abuse, and to insure the coordination of services for children and their families. CACs strive to reduce the trauma of the investigative process by offering a safe, child-friendly environment where videotaped interviews of children are conducted. CACs help to insure that consistent and effective services are provided to children and their families. According to the National Children's Alliance, there are tangible, measurable benefits to the children and in the successful prosecution of offenders. SACCEC operates two such centers in eastern CT. Crisis counselors/advocates from SACCEC provide information and support to the non-offending parents or caregivers of child abuse victims at both the Windham County child advocacy center (Wendy’s Place, which is fully accredited by the National Children’s Alliance) and at the New London County Multidisciplinary Team Child Advocacy Center. Last year our staff accompanied 163 families to Wendy’s Place and the New London Child Advocacy Center to provide support and crisis intervention to the children and their parents during the investigation. Families were provided with information regarding: their rights and the rights of their children; medical care and treatment; Victim’s Compensation; availability of counseling services and the criminal justice system process. Research has shown that collaborative approaches to investigation and treatment provide better outcomes for child victims and their families, as well as increasing successful prosecutions of offenders. Families receive 24-hour support through our 24-hour hotline, allowing them to access services when they are facing difficult decisions or when they need assistance with their child’s behavior or emotional struggles. Ensuring that families have access to ongoing support results in better outcomes for the children.
