Mission Statement

American Classical Orchestra (ACO) is a leader in the field of historically accurate performance. A period instrument orchestra devoted to preserving and performing the repertoire of 17th, 18th, and 19th century composers, ACO recreates the sound world of the masters using priceless historic instruments, as well as era-specific performance techniques. Comprised of the world’s top period instrumentalists, ACO provides audiences with the opportunity to experience classical music in the specific way it was intended to be heard.

About This Cause

Founded in 1984 as the “Orchestra of the Old Fairfield Academy,” the organization was renamed the American Classical Orchestra in 2005, when Founder and Artistic Director Thomas Crawford established its permanent home in New York City. Since, the organization has earned critical praise for its recordings and concerts, including appearances in Lincoln Center’s “Great Performers” series and at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in a musical collaboration with the exhibition entitled “Art and the Empire City: New York, 1825-1861”. The ensemble has recorded the complete wind concerti by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, featuring its principal players as soloists; the Mozart piano concerti K. 107 with Malcolm Bilson as fortepianist; and an album of Venetian Oboe Concerti featuring baroque oboist Marc Schachman. In addition to Bilson and Schachman, many soloists have collaborated with ACO, including fortepianist Robert Levin, violinist Stephanie Chase, flutist Sandra Miller, violist David Miller, hornist RJ Kelley, and concert pianist Vladimir Feltsman on the fortepiano in 2009 at Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center. ACO enlightens New York City audiences with pre-concert talks, symposia, and in-school presentations that lead to deeper appreciation of Classical and Baroque music. Designed to bring concertgoers closer to the performance, Maestro Crawford and the ACO musicians perform live musical excerpts that reveal insightful detail about the concert. The free education program, Classical Music for Kids sends professional musicians into elementary schools to present interactive age-appropriate concerts that enable students to closely engage with the artists, instruments, and compositions. For this work, ACO was awarded a National Endowment for the Arts grant and Early Music America prize. For more information, visit www.aconyc.org.
