Mission Statement

Student Leadership Network supports young people from diverse underserved communities to access educational opportunities that prepare them to lead successful lives.

About This Cause

Student Leadership Network (SL Network) supports three life-changing programs that empower youth to break the cycle of poverty through education: The Young Women's Leadership Schools (TYWLS), a high performing network of all-girls public secondary schools, and CollegeBound Initiative (CBI), a comprehensive college guidance program for young women and men. The Young Women's Leadership Schools (TYWLS) Through its network of high-performing all-girls public schools, Student Leadership Network’s TYWLS supports young women in achieving their higher education dreams and fulfilling their learning and leadership potential. TYWLS are privately supported 6th – 12th grade public secondary schools that promote high-quality learning opportunities in and out of school, and provide a single-sex educational choice for students from underserved communities who are often the first in their families to attend college. Students are admitted based upon their interest and commitment to a obtaining a single-sex and college preparatory education. TYWLS are open to girls of all academic abilities. Girls’ education research guides the TYWLS model, and our schools combine the best practices of all-girls education with effective strategies that address the array of challenges faced by our students. The result is an academically rigorous program fused with strong social-emotional support that forms the basis of TYWLS’ “whole girl” education. As each TYWLS school grows to include a 10th grade, Student Leadership Network hires and places a full-time CollegeBound Initiative (CBI) director of college counseling (DCC) at that school. CBI is a year-round comprehensive college guidance program that works with student from the 6th – 12th grades to ensure that they have access to and can afford a college education. CollegeBound Initiative (CBI) CBI empowers young women and men to realize their higher education potential by placing full-time college guidance experts in high need public schools. CBI is Student Leadership Network’s comprehensive college guidance program delivered by a full-time, school-based director of college counselor (DCC) at each of our partner schools. CBI’s school-based DCC works closely with principals and teachers to create a college-going culture that raises parent and student expectations. DCCs deliver services to students in the 6th-12th grades that include: early college awareness activities; application and enrollment assistance; financial aid counseling for parents and students; experiential/pre-college learning; and transition to college, college persistence and alumni support. DCCs guide students to overcome systemic and financial barriers to going and staying in college. As a result, CBI increases students’ college enrollment rates and helps secure the critical financial aid that makes higher education affordable and achievable. For CBI students, the question is not if but where they will go to college. Young Women's Leadership Network (YWLN) The success of Student Leadership Network’s The Young Women’s Leadership Schools (TYWLS) in New York City has inspired over a dozen single-sex schools to open nationwide. In the 2019-2020 school year, more than 9,000 students will be impacted by 16 YWLN sister schools across the United States including in California, Maryland, Missouri, New York, North Carolina and Texas. YWLN schools are founded with the same TYWLS “whole-girl” model to educate the next generation of women leaders. As a network of educators, we collaborate to share our best educational practices with our sister schools across the country. Our students consistently exceed local and national averages for high school graduation, college admission and matriculation, four-year college graduation, and STEM major completion.
